This year’s Wimbledon singles tournaments are down to the last few rounds and surprise, surprise, some familiar faces are still alive, with their sights set on Grand Slam glory.
On the women’s side, Serena Williams is back in the semi-finals following a hard-fought match against compatriot Alison Riske.
And on the men’s side, the “Big 3” of Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Roger Federer have all made it to the quarter-finals after some dominating performances.
One notable name who is no longer in the running is Coco Gauff, the 15-year-old sensation who was knocked out by former world No. 1 Simona Halep. However, Gauff is already plotting her return and eventual victory at Wimbledon in the near future.
Serena stages comeback to reach semis
Serena Williams is once again in the semi-finals at Wimbledon, but she had to sweat it out.
The seven-time Wimbledon champion was down a service break in the third set of her quarter-final matchup against fellow American Alison Riske. But despite dealing with an ankle injury, Serena won the last three games and the match, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.
“I had to just button up and play hard,” said Williams post-match. “She was playing her heart out.”
Riske, who was coming off her upset of top-seeded Ashleigh Barty in the fourth round, once again gave one of the top players in the world all she could handle. But despite not being at 100 per cent, Williams still had just about enough to go through.
Williams, who is also in the last 16 of the mixed doubles tournament with partner Andy Murray, will face Barbara Strycova in the semi-final. Strycova booked her first trip to the semis in her career by beating 19th-seeded Briton Johanna Konta in straight sets.
Serena has made the final of Wimbledon in each of the past three years she has competed in it. But she will have her hands full against Strycova, who also knocked out No. 4 seed Kiki Bertens in the third round.
Djokovic, Nadal, and Federer all make last eight with ease
Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Roger Federer all made it to the quarter-finals of the French Open, and they’ve done it again at Wimbledon.
The “Big 3” made it to the last eight with relative ease, too. All three have dropped just one set in their first four matches. Nadal dropped his during his wild match against Nick Kyrgios in the second round.
The superstar trio also had similarly dominant fourth-round performances to book their ticket to the quarters.
Federer will have the toughest test of the three as he takes on eighth-seeded Kei Nishikori. Djokovic will face 21st-seeded David Goffin, and Nadal has unseeded American Sam Querrey.
If Federer and Nadal get through their respective matches — and the Wimbledon 2019 betting odds suggest they will — will square off in the semi-finals.
The two legends haven’t met at Wimbledon since their epic final in 2008, which some have dubbed the greatest match of all-time.
Federer has come out on top in six straight meetings against his old rival prior to Nadal’s win at the semis of the French Open last month.
Coco Gauff setting sights on next year
Coco Gauff’s magical Wimbledon finally came to an end with her fourth-round defeat to seventh-seed Simona Halep.
However, the 15-year-old isn’t wallowing in her sorrow and disappointment. Instead, she’s already thinking about getting better and winning Wimbledon next year.
“Obviously, there’s always room for improvement,” Gauff said in an interview with The Associated Press on Tuesday. “I’m going to go and practice and improve some things, so that next time, I can win the tournament.”
Gauff broke onto the scene in stunning fashion with her straight-sets victory over former champion Venus Williams, which is undoubtedly one of the top Wimbledon 2019 highlights. Unsurprisingly, that experience will forever hold a special place in her heart.
“The most important point for me is just the match point after beating Venus. That was a moment that I will never forget,” Gauff said. “Watching the video, it seemed like it all happened quickly. But during it, I felt like I was on the court for like 20 minutes, when I dropped the racket and everything.”
After her magnificent showing in this year’s tournament, you wouldn’t bet against Gauff being a future Wimbledon champion. She’s a star in the making, one who could help a lot of people win some money on SBOBET for years to come.
