Roger Federer vs Marin Cilic (6-3, 6-1, 6-4)
It was never a contest. It was a forgettable match. It was a mess. However, amid the lack of flare that doesn’t fit the Wimbledon final, it was still a day to remember as it is the day when Roger Federer lifted his eighth Wimbledon trophy and etched his name in record books as the only man to do so.
Indeed, a straight set victory was a disappointing result for online gambling and the romantics hoping for another live betting classic, but that doesn’t overshadow the class act that Federer showed to his sports betting followers on his way to history and his 19th Grand Slam success.
Many expected Cilic to delay the coronation of the Swiss Maestro. After all, he gave Federer a run for his money the last time they met at the All England Club. However, a foot blister – of all things – popped his already thin hopes and troubled both his mind and movement.
Of course, everything didn’t go perfectly for Federer. In fact, he had a slow start and even committed a double-fault in his first two service games. He ended up conceding a break chance to Cilic as he trailed 1-2, but the 28-year-old squandered the opportunity and allowed the Fed Express to take the initiative (and the set) behind a sharp returning game.
It was all Federer come the second set as he continued to pressure Cilic from the baseline. The big-hitting Croat was obviously bothered by his blister as he turned emotional after doctors assessed him during the changeover, but that didn’t stop Federer as he took a commanding 5-1 lead for the win.
Cilic did all he could to stay competitive in the third, but Federer had the momentum and didn’t give his struggling opponent any chance, eventually taking the decisive break in the seventh game and never looking back.
Post-match statistics showed how the game went down and how Cilic’s foot issue affected his performance. The World No.6 made 23 unforced errors and was utterly dominated in both first and second serve points won. The 35-year-old Swiss, in contrast, had only eight unforced errors and won 81 percent and 71 percent of his first and second serve points.
Federer finished the match in just one 1 hour and 41 minutes as he became just the second player to win the Wimbledon title without dropping a set in the whole tournament. He also became the oldest Wimbledon champion in the Open Era.
“It means the world to me to hold this trophy, particularly when I haven’t dropped a set,” Federer said. “It’s magical, I can’t believe it yet. It’s too much, really. It’s disbelief that I can achieve such heights.”
Federer will now move to the Top 3 of the ATP standings with the victory, above Novak Djokovic and Stan Wawrinka, who dropped two places. His victory also adds marvel to his “fairy tale” 2017 season in which he already won the Australian Open.
