US Open: Novak Djokovic, Naomi Osaka Looking For an Encore

The 139th edition of the US Open will be held once again at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Centre in Queens, New York where it will feature the sport’s cream of the crop.

Novak Djokovic and Naomi Osaka are out to defend their crown after winning the said tournament just a year ago, but for sure this won’t be a walk in the park for both of them.

With a very competitive playing field, the US Open 2019 odds for both of them to repeat as champions appear to be slim. However, anything is possible in the game of tennis and this year wouldn’t be any different.

Let SBOBET update you with some of the interesting narratives ahead of this much-awaited event.

Who can challenge Djokovic, Nadal, Federer?

Save for Stan Wawrinka’s 2016 US Open title — the trio of Djokovic, Nadal, and Federer has pretty much dominated the men’s draw for the better part of the decade – as they have shared the last 11 Grand Slam titles.

Despite losing to Daniil Medvedev in the recently-concluded Cincinnati Masters, Novak Djokovic enters the tournament as the perennial favourite with his ongoing Grand Slam streak. Since 2007, the Serbian sensation has always made it far in the tournament while making eight total finals appearances.

Roger Federer, on the other hand, will certainly look to find his groove after last winning the US Open in 2008. It can be remembered that the Switzerland native has had a five-peat of such from 2004 to 2008.

Meanwhile, Rafael Nadal continues his fine play and is looking for his fourth US Open crown. He recently won this year’s French Open and he looks to be in superb shape.

With the trio still craving for championship glory, it will be up for the rest of the playing field to keep up. But it’s a good thing that certain players have emerged to be worthy challengers.

Daniil Medvedev is one of the top prospects to win this year's US Open

Daniil Medvedev moved up to the Top 5 after winning the Cincinnati Masters — as per US Open 2019 news — while other youngsters like Dominic Thiem, Stefanos Tsitsipas, and Alexander Zverev have made their own cases as well.

Nick Kyrgios continues to be an enigma for the men’s draw, and he kind of reminds us of John McEnroe with his penchant for on-court tantrums and his high talent level. Once he can fully focus on harnessing his talent for the better — without any distractions – he can definitely reach his peak soon.

Naomi Osaka out to prove she’s no fluke

Naomi Osaka made headlines last year when she made that Cinderella run to win the US Open against none other than Serena Williams in what was a drama-filled affair.

Taking the win with grace and humility at the time, the 20-year-old tennis player put out one of the most scintillating performances in recent memory and she continues to be on top of the WTA Rankings.

Since winning the Australian Open in January, the Japanese-born player has had her share of struggles – and she is still looking to rediscover her form ever since.

Osaka lost in the quarterfinals of the Coupe Rogers in what was a rematch of last year’s US Open final against Serena Williams. Then weeks later, she injured her left knee and lost to Sofia Kenin in the Cincinnati Masters quarterfinals– making her US Open participation uncertain.

The playing field right now in the women’s draw remains open as some perennial contenders are looking to bring home the trophy this time around.

Youngsters like Ashleigh Barty, Bianca Andreescu, and Coco Gauff have fared well so far this year. And let’s not forget the likes of Karolina Pliskova, Simona Halep, Petra Kvitova, and Angelique Kerber who are well within their prime.

Of course, there’s still Serena Williams who is looking to win a Grand Slam since her childbirth in 2017. The 37-year-old is looking to catch Margaret Court’s all-time record with 24 Grand Slam titles.

The American superstar can be commended to her consistency and fine form as she has made to at least the Final Four in every US Open tourney since 2008. She currently has five titles under her belt at the Flushing Meadows.

However, it looks like Father Time is slowly catching up to her as she has suffered back spasms – causing her to withdraw in the Coupe Rogers and in the Cincinnati Masters.

Nonetheless, Serena Williams remains to be a heavy favourite in the US Open and it will be only a matter of time before she gets her 24th Grand Slam title.
