Formula 1: Mercedes, Renault Eyeing For Possible Replacements

Like most sporting events in the world, Formula 1 action has been halted due to the coronavirus pandemic. So the talks lately have been focusing on the futures of several drivers like Daniel Ricciardo, Lewis Hamilton, and Sebastian Vettel.

With their contracts to be expired at the end of this calendar year, the three will have big decisions to make as they can change the landscape of the sport.

The three racers have already said their piece regarding the ongoing rumours. Hamilton and Vettel apparently weren’t warming up to signing with Ferrari, while Daniel Ricciardo looks to be open for a possible reunion with Red Bull.

But like these drivers, constructors have decisions to make as well to ensure the continuity of their club. In particular, Renault and Mercedes have been reported to be looking at certain candidates to possibly join them in 2021.

With the rumour mill continuously gaining steam, allow SBOBET to give you today’s roundup of Formula 1 2020 updates.

Will Hamilton and Vettel do the unthinkable?

The Silver Arrows have been blessed with their driver partnerships for the past decade as it propelled them to the top of the F1 food chain. However, they will be facing big decisions if they want to maintain their success for the foreseeable future.

For starters, they need to sign Lewis Hamilton to a long-term lucrative contract. Since joining the Silver Arrows back in 2012, Hamilton has been a godsend as he led them to six straight constructor titles.

Mercedes should also consider the fact that Valtteri Bottas’ contract is set to expire soon, and they would be wise to find a possible replacement for a No. 2 behind Hamilton should he leave. According to rumours, they have been eyeing Sebastian Vettel to be a possible replacement for the Finnish racer.

Sebastian Vettel had a lacklustre performance last year, placing only fifth in the drivers’ championship. He has formed a partnership with the young Charles Leclerc, but it has been an up-and-down journey so far.

His current contract with the Prancing Horse is only up until the end of this year, which is why they offered him an extension. But a report last month claimed that Ferrari offered him to stay for only one more year with less money.

It looks like Ferrari have reservations for the German especially since they’re leaning towards grooming Charles Leclerc to be their alpha dog in the near future. In addition, the Prancing Horse have eyed a possible reunion with Fernando Alonso as a potential replacement.

Former Formula 1 driver Marc Surer offered an interesting proposition for Vettel. He mentioned that instead of waiting for Hamilton to join the Scudetto, Vettel should consider joining the six-time champions.

“Why not Mercedes? I don’t know now if Lewis Hamilton would accept him as a teammate, but it would be a stunner,” said Surer in an interview.

Joining Hamilton in the Silver Arrows would definitely alter the landscape of Formula 1. Should they be able to pull off this move, their Formula 1 2020 odds of winning their seventh constructors title will rise dramatically.

Renault finding a potential Ricciardo replacement

Just like a year ago, Daniel Ricciardo is at the crossroads once more since he’s been linked to a number of rumours.

Daniel Ricciardo had an underwhelming first season with Renault after finishing at the ninth spot in the drivers’ standings. His contract with the team is reportedly set to expire after this year.

The Aussie has been linked to Ferrari and Red Bull over these past few weeks, which got Renault to consider mulling his potential replacement should these rumours actually come true.

So far, Renault look to be keen on promoting one of their youngsters to the senior team. After a successful stint with the academy last year, 18-year-old Christian Lundgaard is expected to be called up anytime soon.

Renault sees huge potential from the Denmark native and it’s plausible to think that they will groom him to take over should Ricciardo venture into greener pastures yet again.

“Our goal in having him in the academy has always been to get him in F1 with us. But now he has to run Formula 2 first to collect enough points for the super license you need to have in Formula 1,” mentioned Renault Academy director Mia Sharizman.

To qualify for a super license, Lundgaard would need to accumulate 40 points and he has 18 so far. He needs to finish at least fourth in the Formula 2 drivers’ standings to move up in 2021.
