Bayern Munich vs Sevilla FC
If Sevilla can win this upcoming fixture on Thursday night the world of football will stand and stare. Many will cheer particularly in Andalusia, but also in Dortmund and Leipzig I suspect!
It’s Europe’s curtain-raiser. But this season, the UEFA Super Cup has more intrigue than usual as we see a highly-talented Sevilla side try to beat the team which has eclipsed all others in Germany and beyond, sweeping the board last season in devastating style.
All eyes will be on the Ferenc Puskas Stadium as Bayern and Sevilla battle it out to win the first piece of European silverware of the new campaign.
Talking Points
Bayern are at it again!
One week into the Bundesliga season and you’d think we’ve never been away.
It was the same old Bayern, but there’s nothing boring about that as the Bavarians smashed Schalke for eight in the opening fixture of the new campaign.
The 8-0 scoreline must have prompted some heavy sighs around Germany but you can’t help but admire Hansi Flick’s incredible side.
The biggest surprise of all was that Robert Lewandowski scored only once while his team ran riot.
Serge Gnabry starred by helping himself to a hat-trick, while new boy Leroy Sane also impressed on his debut and was rewarded with a goal.

The last time Die Bayern scored eight was in the Champions League quarter final when Lionel Messi’s Barcelona was humbled 8-2 on the way to lifting Europe’s flagship trophy with a final victory over Paris Saint Germain, and it’s been some story in Bavaria since Flick took over half way through last season.
Bayern picked up 58 points from the last available 60 as they coasted to an eighth successive Bundesliga title, before adding the DFB-Pokal Cup by beating Bayer Leverkusen in the final.
In their European campaign, Bayern won all six of their group games, scoring 24 goals thanks to a phenomenal partnership between Lewandowski and Thomas Muller.
The Polish hit man scored 55 goals in all competitions last season and is already off the mark this term.
Gnabry and Sane are likely to keep their places in a front four which could terrorize any defence on a regular.
Rakitic is Sevilla’s star quality
Bayern’s opponents are not short of class either. Amidst Barcelona’s clearout in the summer, the move of Ivan Rakitic to Sevilla has been eye-catching.
Head coach Julen Lopetegui brought the midfield ace back to the club he skippered to Europa League success in 2014.
The Croatian will be on the biggest UEFA Super Cup 2020 news if he can inspire the Spaniards to a win on Thursday, but he certainly has the pedigree.
He won four La Liga titles in six seasons at the Camp Nou before rejoining Sevilla on a four-year contract.
And he won’t be suffering any flashbacks from Barca’s 8-2 drubbing at the hands of Bayern in August in which he stayed on the bench throughout. That turned out to be a smart move!
Sevilla take their place in this showcase having won the Europa League for the sixth time in 14 years, seeing off some decent sides along the way.
Having already seen off Roma and Wolves to reach the last four, Sevilla beat Manchester United in the semifinal before edging a five-goal thriller against Inter Milan to lift the trophy.
Lopetegui’s team finished fourth in a competitive La Liga with a fast finish to the season, so they are not short on confidence.
They will be skippered by club legend Jesus Navas and Rakitic is likely to take his place in midfield, replacing the departed Ever Banega who has joined Al-Shabab in Saudi.
And the Spaniards have some useful firepower up front with Lucas Ocampos, who’s had an excellent campaign last season. He will be backed by Munir El Haddadi and Luuk de Jong, who bagged a brace in the Europa League final.
History
The two teams most recently met in the quarterfinal of the 2018 Champions League. It was a hard fought clash which Bayern edged with a 1-2 victory in Seville and a goalless draw at home.
Bayern have been breaking record after record over the past few weeks, but Sevilla too have been in outstanding form and they are unbeaten in 23 games in all competitions.
But that only matches the Germans’ winning streak and they are unbeaten in 28.
Betting Tip
Bayern Munich vs Sevilla FC | Over 3.50 @ 1.82 | |
September 25, 03:00 (GMT+8) |
It’s no surprise that the UEFA Super Cup 2020 odds are backing the Bavarians by some way. Bayern are at 1.31 to win with Sevilla at 6.77 and the draw is 5.22.
But I believe the value is in backing a high-scoring game between two teams stacked with attacking talent and brimming with confidence.
It’s going to be a great game for the neutral!
