Georgia 0-1 Wales
Tom Lawrence fired a beauty tonight to give Wales a crucial win against Georgia and his team’s World Cup hopes a massive boost.
Three wins in a row have given the Welsh a great chance of grabbing a top-two finish in Group D. But pre-match betting tips were split. Georgia are difficult opponents to beat, and sports betting fans noted that Gareth Bale was absent, which made the result a tough call. But Wales came through at betting odds of around 1.85, and now their destiny is in their own hands.
Georgia had more possession in the first half, but Wales had the best chances, with Aaron Ramsey and Tom Lawrence both trying their luck. The hosts came close to breaking the deadlock though, Giorgi Kvilitaia heading just wide on 37 minutes.
But then, four minutes after the break, Lawrence broke forward and unleashed a super strike from 20 yards to put Wales ahead with his first international goal. Maybe the Georgia keeper could have done better, but this was the moment Wales fans had dreamed of.
Sam Vokes almost got through for a second on 53 minutes, which would have done much to settle Welsh nerves. And then Aaron Ramsey tested the Georgia keeper and when his shot was parried, Vokes couldn’t capitalise on the rebound.
As the clock ran down, Georgia stepped up the pace and put Wayne Hennessey’s goal under some pressure, and the tension in the Wales camp became palpable. But Chris Coleman’s defenders held firm for a vital win.
And next for Wales…it’s Ireland
