Serie A: Can Motta Bring Juve Back to the Top?

Juventus fans are understandably growing impatient because they haven’t won a Serie A title since their nine-peat ended in 2019-20.

Max Allegri’s second stint with the club did not go as planned since they only won one trophy in his four-year run in Turin, which was the 2023-24 Coppa Italia, so the club decided to go in another direction this summer.

The Bianconeri started by appointing Thiago Motta to be their next manager, and Juventus fans are excited because of his potential and what he brings to the table.

The SBOTOP Serie A 2024 odds have Juventus within the top four, which is a huge achievement for most Italian clubs. But Juventus have lofty standards to try to live up to since winning trophies is all they want to do.

Can Thiago Motta lead the Old Lady back to the Promised Land? Without further ado, here’s their outlook for the 2024-25 campaign.

How Motta got the Juve job

Juventus felt the need to restart after the last four seasons with Max Allegri, so they’ve brought in Thiago Motta, one of the most exciting young managers in the world today.

Thiago Motta was hired by the Old Lady last month, and the 41-year-old is going to be at the helm for at least the next three years.

He has been around in Serie A for the last five years as manager after his playing days at PSG. Thiago Motta started his Italian top-flight journey in Genoa and Spezia before arriving in Bologna in 2022.

After the club finished 13th in 2021-22, Motta dragged Bologna up to ninth in his first full season 2022-23. And last season, he delivered the club’s first Champions League football for the first time since 1964-65.

The good news for Juventus is that it shouldn’t take the players too long to adjust to his tactics because Motta normally deploys a 3-4-1-2 formation. Unlike Allegri, however, Motta isn’t afraid of risks, as he can go extreme with his 2-7-2 formation when needed.

Despite being known for his progressive style of play, Motta’s teams aren’t slouches on the defencive end. Last season, Bologna limited their opponents to only 10.8 shots per game, which was only behind Fiorentina’s league-high mark of 10.

With that said, Juventus’ front office has their work cut out for them in surrounding Thiago Motta with a good core to work with.

Key transfers for Juventus

To their credit, the Bianconeri have been busy this summer since they’re retooling their squad despite facing financial constraints. Their first notable move was adding Douglas Luiz from Aston Villa in exchange for Enzo Barrenchea and Samuel Iling-Junior.

Juve have a gem in Douglas Luiz because he has been one of the most underrated midfielders in the Premier League. According to Opta, the Brazilian has recorded the most chances (98), chances from set pieces (42), tackles (130), and interceptions (63) in the last two seasons.

Douglas Luiz was not the only midfielder they’ve signed, as they also bought Khephren Thuram from OGC Nice. And according to the Serie A 2024 news, Juventus are making a bid for Teun Koopmeiners, who is keen on leaving Atalanta this summer.

The Old Lady let go of Adrien Rabiot for free and sold Moise Kean to Fiorentina, and they placed Wojciech Szczesny on the chopping block to make way for Michele Di Gregorio. Arek Milik is likely on his way out too.

Juventus also aim to strengthen their attacking corps, as they’ve made approaches to Karim Adeyemi and Arnaud Kalimuendo. OGC Nice’s Jean-Clair Todibo is on their wishlist too.

Juventus might be the dark horse

Juventus are not expected to win the Serie A trophy next season, but they aren’t far off from the likes of AC Milan and Inter Milan.

If Juventus are going to make it back on top, it’ll likely be on the back of superb campaigns from their young players. The Old Lady need Dusan Vlahovic and Federico Chiesa to fire goals, while Andrea Cambiaso, Fabio Miretti, and Nicolo Fagioli have to hold it down in the middle of the park.

As things stand, Juventus just need to be ready if ever the Milan-based clubs flop in the Italian top-flight this season.

But if they’re unable to win the Serie A title, winning either the Coppa Italia or the Supercoppa Italiana while securing another top four finish should appease the fans in the meantime.

The Thiago Motta project will experience growing pains along the way, so fans in Turin will need to exercise patience this upcoming season.
