Atalanta vs Lazio
Two of the best Serie A teams will be featured in a high-scoring showdown this weekend, as Atalanta and Lazio try to extend their unbeaten run.
After a long and winding road, the Biancocelesti finally go on top for the first time since the 2010/11 season when the much-awaited Derby d’Italia was cancelled last weekend.
Lazio hold 62 points at the table while defending champions Juventus have 60, and they have a prime opportunity to break away from the pack should they pass this upcoming test with flying colours.
Atalanta, meanwhile, have been doing well for themselves too. The Orobici have been undefeated in their last seven fixtures in all competitions and some of them came in high-scoring fashion.
They have also excelled in the Champions League as they won over Valencia, 4-1, in the first leg of the Round of 16 stage and they are just getting started.
This fixture is expected to have a lot of fireworks and goals, so football fans will be in a huge treat.
But before we get into the match, allow SBOBET to brief you with some important talking points.
Talking Points
Atalanta on fire
The Orobici’s success on the field can largely be attributed to their prolific scoring. As of this writing, Atalanta lead Serie A in goals scored with 70 already so far – with most of them being part of our top Serie A 2020 highlights.
Team manager Gian Piero Gasperini has so many weapons in his diverse roster. Their forwards in Josip Ilicic, Luis Muriel, and Duvan Zapata may be leading the team with 42 goals and 10 assists, but their other players have been superb as well.
Robin Gosens have eight goals and five assists while Alejandro Gomez is their most creative playmaker with seven goals and 12 assists. On the other hand, Mario Pasalic is emerging as a scoring threat as well with seven goals and seven assists.
Atalanta have recorded some of the most lopsided tallies over these past few months. They started off 2020 with a bang when they notched back-to-back wins against AC Milan and Parma with identical 5-0 scores.
Last January 26th, Gian Piero Gasperini’s side notched a 7-0 clean sheet against Torino. And most recently, they dominated Lecce on the road with a 7-2 victory.
In the first leg of their Round of 16 matchup in the Champions League, they notched a 4-1 win against Valencia and they are looking to be the dark horse of the competition.
They did, however, have losses that were uncharacteristic. Atalanta were shown the door after losing to Fiorentina in the Coppa Italia while they lost a tough one against S.P.A.L. six days after.
Now facing the league leaders in Lazio, Atalanta will be put to the test once more. And this will be the perfect gauge for them to determine on whether they could challenge for the Serie A title any time soon.
Are Lazio contenders or pretenders?
By winning over Juventus to claim the Supercoppa Italiana, perhaps Lazio have given us a preview of what they are capable of. Since then, they have yet to lose in their last 11 games.
Most of them, however, are against lower-seeded teams as only Napoli and Inter Milan were their opponents in the top five. At the same time, they suffered a couple of scares when they kind of let their guard down.
They drew level against the likes of AS Roma and Verona while they almost squandered their lead against Genoa. Also, they’ve only posted three clean sheets during their unbeaten run.
The Biancocelesti, of course, are led by Ciro Immobile who continues to light up Serie A with 29 goals and seven assists so far this term and he has been getting ample support from his teammates.
Felipe Caicedo and Joaquin Correa have eight goals and two assists apiece while Sergej Milinkovic-Savic has five goals and five assists. Luis Alberto, meanwhile, has four goals and 12 assists.
While most might think that their rise to the top is a fluke, Lazio have a chance to prove all the doubters wrong starting this weekend.
History
These two teams were involved in a high-scoring affair in their last matchup which ended at 3-3. Atalanta were leading 3-0 before half time, but the Biancocelesti mounted a huge comeback to equalise in the end.
Atalanta and Lazio have split in their last six encounters with both squads winning two matches each along with two draws.
