Premier League: Liverpool Look to Complete Massive Manchester Double

Liverpool vs Manchester United

Liverpool kept their quadruple bid alive as they saw off Manchester City in the FA Cup semi-finals on the weekend. And now, the Reds will look to remain in the Premier League title race when they face fierce rivals Manchester United in midweek.

United are suddenly back in the top-four race after they beat bottom side Norwich thanks to a Cristiano Ronaldo hat-trick and both north London clubs – Tottenham and Arsenal – suffered shock defeats.

However, the Premier League 2022 betting odds will still have the Red Devils as heavy underdogs against Liverpool, who have been unbeatable at Anfield this season.

Talking Points

Liverpool coming off confidence-boosting City win

Liverpool will head into their big clash against rivals Manchester United with a lot of confidence. After sealing their spot in the semi-finals of the Champions League, they saw off another Manchester club – Man City – 3-2 in the semi-finals of the FA Cup over the weekend.

The Reds were slightly second-best in their 2-2 draw with City in their recent Premier League matchup, but Jurgen Klopp’s side blitzed the Citizens at Wembley, going up 3-0 by half-time and successfully saw off the match.

Sadio Mane scored a brace as he continued his fantastic end-of-season form. The Senegalese striker has now scored four goals in his last four games.

Meanwhile, Mohamed Salah’s struggles in front of goal are still ongoing. The Egyptian has now gone scoreless in his last six appearances in all competitions, although he is still the Premier League’s top scorer with 20 goals.

Salah will look to produce more Premier League 2022 highlights against United, against whom he has scored seven goals in his last five games. That includes his sensational hat-trick at Old Trafford in their first meeting of the season.

Elsewhere, Diogo Jota could rejoin the starting XI after only coming on late against City in the cup. The same goes for captain Jordan Henderson.

And at the back, Joel Matip is expected to return to partner Virgil van Dijk in the centre of the defence despite Ibrahima Konate scoring in three consecutive appearances.

Liverpool have been absolutely immense at Anfield this season. They are the only club in the Premier League unbeaten at home (12 wins, 3 draws), scoring 39 goals and conceding just seven. Moreover, they have won their last 10 league home games in a row, conceding just two goals during that time.

Man United dealing with midfield dilemma

Manchester United finally snapped a disappointing run of three games in all competitions without a win by beating bottom side Norwich City 3-2 at home.

Cristiano Ronaldo once again came to the Red Devils’ rescue with a hat-trick, the 50th of is remarkable club career. They were the first goals Ronaldo had scored since United’s last win – a 3-2 win over Tottenham – in which he also scored a hat-trick.

Thanks to the win, coupled with both Tottenham and Arsenal losing, United are now just three points back of Spurs for fourth place with six games to go.

United were missing both first-choice midfielders in Fred and Scott McTominay against Norwich, so coach Ralf Rangnick went with a midfield three of Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard, and Bruno Fernandes. That left them exposed defensively, as Norwich were able to produce 15 shots against them.

Fred and McTominay are both likely to miss out once again in midweek, which could leave the United midfield overmatched against Liverpool.

United are also expected to be without centre-back Raphael Varane, so Victor Lindelof is likely to partner Harry Maguire in defence.

TO SEE UPDATED ODDS

Liverpool have dominated Manchester United in the Premier League in recent years. The Reds have gone unbeaten in their last seven league meetings, winning on four occasions. That includes their back-to-back 4-2 and 5-0 thrashings of United at Old Trafford.

Man United’s last win over Liverpool came in 2018, a 2-1 win at Old Trafford. Meanwhile, their last win at Anfield came back in 2016, when a lone Wayne Rooney goal gave the Red Devils a 1-0 win.

Betting Tip

SBOTOP odds have Liverpool installed as massive 1.40 favourites to beat Manchester United at Anfield. The Red Devils are priced at 7.20 to pull off an unlikely upset, while a draw is 4.60.

In the form they are in at the moment, it’s hard to see Liverpool slipping up at home, especially against a United side that has been playing subpar football in recent weeks.

Even with Salah not at his absolute best, the Reds just have too many attacking weapons to get the better of the Red Devils. Look for them to get the win they need to keep the Premier League title race alive.
