Liverpool vs Chelsea
It’s all bubbling up at the top of the Premier League as, on Sunday, Liverpool has a huge hurdle to clear in a blockbuster clash with Chelsea.
Premier League Liverpool vs Chelsea is the match of the weekend; and it could be one which makes a huge difference to the final run-in. It’s undoubtedly Liverpool’s toughest game left, with due respect to Cardiff City, Huddersfield, Newcastle and Wolves who also stand in the Reds’ way.
By the time Liverpool and Chelsea take the field, Manchester City will have finished an away game at Crystal Palace where a win would take Pep Guardiola’s team back to the top, above the Reds by a point.
This could well be a big weekend!
Talking Points
Can Liverpool finally lay the ghost?
This is Liverpool’s best chance to win a first ever Premier League title since they were in a similar position in 2014, when Brendan Rodgers came so close to steering the Reds to the domestic glory they have yearned for. In the long history of Liverpool vs Chelsea highlights the biggest moment came when Steven Gerrard slipped during the 2014 Anfield clash, allowing Demba Ba to run through and score, to effectively hand the title to Manchester City.
It’s a moment SBOBET football fans will remember, but one which Reds fans will have played over in their minds too many times; and now it’s time to consign it to history.
The difference this time is that Liverpool has players capable of seeing the job through, with strikers Mo Salah and Sadio Mane on 18 and 17 goals, Alisson Becker keeping 17 clean sheets, the most in the league; and that’s with no little thanks to the form of centre back Virgil Van Dijk and attacking wing back Andrew Robertson.
Fixture list kinder to Reds
Liverpool will come into the game in good shape after a comfortable workout in the Champions League against Porto on Tuesday, running out 2-0 winners without breaking too much sweat.
But Chelsea has had a much busier week travelling to Prague to take on Slavia on Thursday night, and that was after a Monday night London derby against West Ham. Marcos Alonso’s late header gave the Blues a win in Prague as head coach Maurizio Sarri made seven changes, resting Eden Hazard, N’Golo Kante and Gonzalo Higuain.
Chelsea is getting nicely into its stride at the right time, winning the last four games in all competitions, and three in the league which has taken the Blues up to third in the table in the chase for Champions League football.
The Blues are not a one man team, but, and it’s a big but, they seem to rely on the mercurial Hazard to provide their big moments rather too much at times. The Belgian scored one of the goals of the season to beat West Ham last week. He made a direct run, leaving four defenders in his wake before firing home. It was a goal Lionel Messi would have been proud of.
This is a game on which the SBOBET Premier League 2019 could turn and, with two highly talented teams in good form it’s a tough one to call.
History
In the 71 games these teams have played in the Premier League era the Blues have the edge, winning 29 to Liverpool’s 23 and there have been 19 draws.
The Blues have also won two of the last five matches, while the other three have been 1-1 draws.
Liverpool’s home form is superb, still undefeated, winning 14 and drawing two, and they have won their last four at Anfield. But remember Chelsea is on a four match winning run… and they have the best player.
Hazard isn’t far behind Liverpool’s two strikers with 16 goals and has by far the most assists at 12, with Robertson Liverpool’s best provider with eight.
Betting Tip
Liverpool vs Chelsea | Chelsea Asian Handicap +0.50 @ 2.36 | |
April 14, 23:30 (GMT+8) |
This is going to be a Clash of the Titans and at 1.67 to win, the hosts look a little short to me at a time when the pressure is mounting and Chelsea starts to look like a real force again. But with the draw at 3.70 and Chelsea at 5.00 we should see a home win and Liverpool players have had an easier week.
The Reds haven’t beaten Chelsea in five games though; and they have been relying on late and sometimes lucky goals to keep their run going. Jurgen Klopp will hope his team’s luck doesn’t run out, and in many ways they deserve it to hold out.
1-0 is the most likely result, at odds of 6.80, but 1-1 is not far away at 7.00. And I just have a sneaky feeling Chelsea will pose a few too many problems for their hosts.
