Talking Points
Manchester City are close to the finish line
At this point, the Premier League title is for Manchester City’s to lose.
They have been brilliant all season as they kept on piling wins and points, and now they find themselves at the summit once again.
City’s brilliance on both ends of the pitch has been in full display since they boast the Premier League’s best attack and defence – scoring 71 goals while only conceding 24 from their opponents.
Kevin De Bruyne, Ilkay Gundogan, Phil Foden, Riyad Mahrez, and Bernardo Silva headline City’s overwhelming firepower out front as they keep on adding to the Premier League 2021 highlights reel.
Meanwhile, Ruben Dias — who is one of the top signings of the 2020/21 season — spearheads their suffocating defence alongside John Stones, Aymeric Laporte, and Ederson.
Pep Guardiola has been getting all the plaudits for what he has done for Manchester City. And as the trophies keep on coming, one can’t help but wonder on whether he should be considered as one of the game’s greatest managers.
But first things first, Guardiola and his men need to be focused at the task at hand since Tuchel’s Chelsea are no joke.
Chelsea aim to solidify top four place
Chelsea have all the incentive to beat Manchester City this weekend since it will help their cause, and they’ll have Manchester United and Leicester City to root for them to win.
After a shocking setback versus West Brom last April 3rd, Thomas Tuchel’s men have gone undefeated in their last four Premier League fixtures – beating Crystal Palace, West Ham, and Fulham, while drawing against Brighton.
Thomas Tuchel’s men have all the confidence in the world since they eliminated Real Madrid to move on to the Champions League final where they’ll take on their opponents this Saturday.
Timo Werner and Kai Havertz look to have turned the corner playing for Tuchel, but they’ll have their hands full in trying to penetrate City’s formidable backline.
With fifth-placed West Ham United hot on their heels, Chelsea must find a way to extend their unbeaten run to secure their Champions League spot next term.
History
Prior to England, Pep Guardiola and Thomas Tuchel are big rivals in the Bundesliga – coaching for Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund respectively.
Since then, Guardiola has the edge over Tuchel since he has only lost once in all of their six meetings (W3, D2, L1).
As far as Manchester City and Chelsea are concerned, the Citizens hold the advantage in the recent head-to-heads.
Manchester City have won six of their last 10 meetings with Chelsea in all competitions, and they won over them in their reverse Premier League fixture last January.
All it took was a brilliant first half for the Citizens to pull away at Stamford Bridge. Ilkay Gundogan, Phil Foden, and Kevin De Bruyne all recorded one goal apiece in the fixture’s first 34 minutes, while Callum Hudson-Odoi scored one for Chelsea during added time for consolation.
This Saturday will mark the 168th meeting between these two clubs in all competitions. Chelsea leads this matchup with 69 wins, while Manchester City have won 59 times along with 40 draws.
