Premier League: The Epic Chase for Europe

Tottenham Hotspur vs Leicester City

Champions and Europa League places are still up for grabs in England and two of the biggest players in the final run-in come head to head this weekend.

Premier League: Spurs vs Leicester City is the only top-flight game on Sunday and, with the eyes of the world watching, one of them could take a big step towards their goal. Tottenham are currently in seventh place, which is likely to win a Europa League birth, while Leicester are up in fourth, the last available spot which gives access to the Champions League.

Spurs have been in the better form since the return of football but Leicester arrive on the back of a morale-boosting victory over Sheffield United and the latest SBOBET odds tell us this clash is all set up to be a belter.

Talking Points

Spurs returning stars find their feet

Of all the teams which have arguably benefited from a three-month break from football, Spurs are right up there. Big players, notably Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son, have benefitted from the lay-off when they were expected to be out for the rest of the season, though head coach Jose Mourinho reckons the damage was already done: “I think Spurs would be even better without all the problems that we had,” he says. “No other team had even similar problems.”

Spurs are fourth in the form table since Mourinho’s appointment and that’s some achievement considering goal-keeper Hugo Lloris was also sidelined; but now the injured have returned his side have thrived, coming from behind to beat Arsenal in the London derby and they made it back to back wins on Wednesday up in Newcastle with a convincing performance. Kane scored a second-half double as Spurs swept the Magpies away and Son was also on target.

Foxes still fighting

In contrast, Brendan Rodgers’ side returned to action in a strong position, third in the table and with an eight-point cushion protecting their Champions League place, but that has all but disappeared and they are only ahead of fifth-placed Manchester United on goal difference.

After capitulating to a 4-1 defeat against relegation battlers Bournemouth it looked like Leicester were about to drop out of the top four when the Red Devils led against Southampton deep into their game. But Michael Obafemi’s 96th-minute equaliser meant the Foxes held on to fourth place by the slightest of margins.

Then any doubts that the Foxes have the stomach for the fight were dispelled when they dispatched the notoriously difficult Sheffield United 2-0. That hard-fought victory could turn out to be the most important three points of the season as it puts the Foxes’ destiny in their own hands with a final game at home to Manchester United.

Rodgers gave 19-year-old Luke Thomas his debut against Sheffield and he had a dream start, crossing for Ayoze Perez’ 29th-minute goal to get his first Premier League assist.

With Harry Kane back on top form, a tale of two strikers could easily dominate the Spurs vs Leicester City news, as Jamie Vardy is on target to collect the Golden Boot. The artful Fox has bagged 23 goals this season, three more than Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Southampton’s Danny Ings.

James Maddison and Ben Chilwell out for the Premier League game vs Spurs

History

The Foxes have the slightest edge in the head to heads with 13 wins to Spurs 12, since 1994, and there have been six draws.

The Foxes nudged ahead in that competition in the return clash at the King Power Stadium back in September, when James Maddison and Ricardo struck in the second half after Kane had given the visitors an early lead.

Recent form favours the hosts as Spurs have won four games from the last six while Leicester’s victory over Sheffield was only the Foxes second in that period.

And Leicester have failed to win any of their previous three games away to Tottenham.

Betting Tip

??
Tottenham Hotspur vs Leicester City Over 2.5 @ 1.98
July 19, 23:00 (GMT+8)

Take a look at the Spurs vs Leicester City betting odds and the striking note is how tight we expect this game to be. These are two evenly matched teams; Spurs are three places behind but are at home, while Leicester might just have rediscovered their form just at the right time.

Tottenham are slight favourites at 2.30, with Leicester at 2.90 and the draw is available at odds of at 3.20.

An alternative bet of 2-3 goals is at 1.88, and I can see either side winning by the odd goal in three, while 1-1 is the lowest priced scoreline at odds of 5.40.
