Manchester United 2-0 Manchester City
Romelu Lukaku scored his second goal in two games, and this was so, so sweet for Manchester United fans as the Red Devils swept aside their City rivals in the ICC Cup.
Pre-season it may be, but this is an early coup for Jose Mourinho, his side was second favourites according to pre-match betting odds, and betting websites predict his team will finish third in the Premier League. But Jose is aiming higher as he builds a team in his favoured shape.
In Romelu Lukaku he has bought a big, strong, lethal finisher who thrives in physical football games. Has Jose found his new Didier Drogba?
United have a lot of work to do, but there were encouraging signs for Reds, not least in the pairing of Lukaku and Marcus Rashford. They put on a treat for the 67,000 fans who packed into the NRG Stadium in Texas.
Both keepers were busy, but Ederson saw more action in the City net, making three smart saves in the opening exchanges. David de Gea had to stretch to tip over a Raheem Sterling effort. And it was United who went deservedly in front on 37 minutes when Lukaku latched on to a brilliant long ball from Paul Pogba before rounding Ederson and slotting home. It was vintage Lukaku.
And only two minutes later, Rashford doubled the lead after firing home from a tight angle.
Gabriel Jesus looked sharp for City in the second half, but it was Lukaku who could have added to his tally, crashing the crossbar and then netting on 79 minutes only to be flagged offside.
Now, surely, that will make Jose smile again.
