The betting odds suggest it’s highly unlikely.
Yet with the top La Liga sides back in Europe, perhaps some will take their eye off the ball in domestic football games.
Perhaps a few sports betting shocks can be mustered by those desperate for points.
WEEK 24 SATURDAY:
Girona vs Leganes
Both sides narrowly lost last weekend.
Yet, it speaks volumes for their progress that they remain in relative comfort in mid-table.
Dimitris Siovas will be suspended for the visitors who should meet the hosts determined to bounce back from their unlucky defeat to Sevilla.
Las Palmas vs Sevilla
As I mentioned, Sevilla were rather fortunate and had goalkeeper Sergio Rico to thank for some fine saves, including a penalty.
So could this be the chance for Las Palmas to sneak out of the drop zone?
They secured a fine point in Bilbao last time out and Sevilla could also have one eye on their upcoming Champions League clash with Manchester United.
Eibar vs Barcelona
There is no doubt the success story of the season so far remains Eibar.
The seventh-placed outfit is punching well above their weight and have nothing to fear as they host clear leaders Barcelona.
Barca thrashed Eibar 6-1 earlier this season, but this one should be closer. However, the appointment of referee Hernandez Hernandez to officiate this fixture for the third time in a row—he was involved in much controversy last season—is a curious one.
WEEK 24 SUNDAY:
Alaves vs Deportivo La Coruna
Three wins and a draw in their last five matches have turned around Alaves’ season.
They are one of the form teams in La Liga, having moved seven points clear of the drop zone—their 2-1 success at Villarreal last weekend one of the results of the year.
Their resurgence means they will start as favourites against second-from-bottom Deportivo, who showed little signs of improvement in new manager Clarence Seedorf’s first match in charge.
Malaga vs Valencia
They may have been beaten and remain bottom but Malaga can take heart from their narrow defeat to Atletico Madrid last weekend.
Not that this weekend gets much easier as they welcome third-placed Valencia to La Rosaleda.
It’s quite clear what they need to remedy—a failure to score in 16 of their 23 league matches so far is the Andalusians’ main problem.
Their joint top scorers so far have three goals each!
Real Sociedad vs Levante
Levante were quite rightly aggrieved at the manner of their defeat to Valencia.
Dubious decisions seemed to cost them what would have been a valuable point and possibly more.
They must put that setback behind them against a side thrashed by Real Madrid, 5-2, in the Bernabeu.
Atletico Madrid vs Athletic Bilbao
Unusually, Bilbao are stuttering in mid-table with 10 draws out of 23 frustrating their progress.
However, they were boosted last week by the return of highly rated goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.
They travel to Madrid to face Atletico who, while only on the fringes of the leaders, have emerged as Barcelona’s nearest challengers.
WEEK 24 MONDAY:
RCD Espanyol vs Villarreal
After their shock defeat to lowly Alaves last time out, the Yellow Submarine will not take the visit to Espanyol lightly.
Quique Sanchez Flores’ men are battling relegation which means they need all three points here.
If they slip to a third straight defeat, Villarreal could end the weekend outside of the top six.
Real Betis vs Real Madrid
Betis welcome the champions on the fringes of the race for a top-six spot.
They also welcome them after Los Blancos and the number one player in the world, Cristiano Ronaldo, delivered a champions’ response against PSG in the Champions League.
This has the hallmarks of an entertaining clash.
WEEK 24 TUESDAY:
Getafe vs Celta Vigo
Getafe are back to home comforts after drawing in the Nou Camp to give outside title hope to Atletico Madrid.
Victory and they will leapfrog their opponents into the top half of the table.
Vigo need the points after their Euro berth bid suffered a blow in a 2-2 draw with Espanyol, despite a Maxi Gomez double.
