Anthony Martial climbed off the bench to give the Red Devils a priceless win against Spurs and a chance for Jose Mourinho to answer his critics. It wasn’t a classic and when Jose hooked Marcus Rashford to bring Martial on, there were boos around Old Trafford. Still, Mourinho, as ever, had the last word.
Bournemouth 0-1 Chelsea
And what’s good enough for Jose is good enough for Antonio Conte as Chelsea won by a single goal at the Vitality Stadium. Eden Hazard scored his first league goal of the season but the Blues remain nine points from the top, while Eddie Howe’s Cherries are stuck in the drop zone.
Crystal Palace 2-2 West Ham United
You’re hanging on to a 2-1 lead in the 96th minute and your player is heading unchallenged toward the opposition corner flag to run the final seconds down. What do you want him to do? Well, under pressure Hammers boss Slaven Bilic didn’t want Michail Antonio to chip the ball to the Palace keeper for the hosts to break and Wilfried Zaha to score with the last kick of the game. Sickener!
Liverpool 3-0 Huddersfield
Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool swept the Terriers away after Mo Salah had missed a penalty in the first half. Daniel Sturridge, Roberto Firmino, and Georginio Wijnaldum spared Mo’s blushes with second half strikes which lift Liverpool up to sixth.
Watford 0-1 Stoke City
There were fun and games at Vicarage Road where a sweet Darren Fletcher strike gave Stoke 75 minutes to protect a precious lead. It was classic Stoke as they frustrated the Hornets in a bad tempered game which yielded eight yellow cards, and Charlie Adam even managed to miss a sitter to close the match out in injury time.
Brighton & Hove Albion 1-1 Southampton
Honours even at the Amex Stadium after Steven Davis had headed the Saints into a half time lead. Glenn Murray followed up his double against West Ham with another headed goal shortly after half time to continue Brighton’s impressive start to life in the Premier League.
Leicester City 2-0 Everton
Claude Puel’s first game in charge of Leicester ended in a welcome home win. The Foxes struck early when Jamie Vardy finished off a superb counter attack. Then poor Jonjoe Kenny sliced a clearance into his own net to make it two. Everton had all of the ball but no threat…and no points.
Burnley hosts Newcastle on Monday Night Football. 2.88 a home win or 2.60 the away win, 3.05 the draw.
