Granada vs Sevilla
The search for the first La Liga win continues for Granada and they’ll have another crack at it when they host Sevilla at the Los Carmenes this Sunday night.
The hosts are languishing at the 18th spot having collected just three points thus far, and they are in danger of sliding down further if they can’t dig themselves out of the hole that they’re in.
Meanwhile, Julen Lopetegui’s side has been impressive to start the new season as they’re placed third at the standings with 14 points.
The SBOTOP betting odds favour the visitors since they are in much better form compared to their hosts. However, Granada have shown that they can hang around with Sevilla in recent occasions.
Without further ado, here is the match preview between these two Andalusian clubs.
Talking Points
Robert Moreno is fighting for his Granada coaching job
Robert Moreno is currently on the coaching hot seat given his squad’s poor run of La Liga 2021 results.
Granada have yet to win a single La Liga fixture this season as they’ve gathered four losses and three draws in the first seven matchdays.
It hasn’t been the same since Diego Martinez left after turning down an extension this summer, especially with what he has done to the club during his tenure.
When he took over in 2018, Martinez led Granada to promotion from the Segunda Division before taking them to a seventh-place finish and qualify for the Europa League for the first time in club history.
Last season, Granada reached to as far as the Europa League quarter-finals while finishing ninth in La Liga.
To be fair, Robert Moreno shouldn’t shoulder all the blame since he has been dealt with a bad hand as Granada lost two of their top scorers from last season in Roberto Soldado and Kenedy to Levante and Flamengo respectively this past offseason.
Luis Suarez — not the one in Atletico Madrid — has been tasked to fill in the void and he’s doing an admirable job with two goals so far but he will need more support from his attacking partners.
Sevilla poised to move up
If things go according to plan for Sevilla, they could find themselves at the table summit by the end of this matchday.
Along with this fixture, Real Sociedad and Real Madrid have games against Getafe and Espanyol respectively, so Julen Lopetegui’s men are praying that their fellow pacesetters will suffer upsets.
Either way, Sevilla must take care of business by grabbing three points from this contest and they have the necessary personnel to do so.
Summer acquisitions Erik Lamela and Rafa Mir have been phenomenal for Los Palanganas and they are expected to start here with Youssef En-Nesyri and Thomas Delaney sidelined.
En-Nesyri won’t play until the end of October due to a hamstring injury while Delaney will serve his suspension after being sent off against Espanyol previously.
They are unbeaten in all competitions for a reason and they’ll look to maintain their form to gain more traction in the championship race.
History
Sevilla hold an impressive head-to-head record against Granada. Out of their last 20 games, Sevilla have won in 12 while Granada managed only two victories along with six draws.
Their previous encounter took place in April where Sevilla came out 2-1 winners as Ivan Rakitic and Lucas Ocampos got one goal apiece while Roberto Soldado scored one in the losing effort.
Granada have lost each of their last four Andalusian derbies against Sevilla in Spanish top-flight. If they’ll lose this Sunday, it would be the second time since 1960 that they’ve lost five straight against their visitors.
Not winning at least once after the first seven matchdays is bad omen for Granada. When this happened previously in the 2016/17 season, they were eventually relegated to the Segunda Division.
Betting Tip
Granada vs Sevilla | Sevilla Asian Handicap -0.50 @ 1.83 | |
October 4, 03:00 (GMT+8) |
As expected, Sevilla are installed as the favourites to win in the La Liga 2021 odds.
Los Palanganas are pegged at 1.83, whereas Granada are priced lower at 4.30 and a draw is at 3.45 in the 1×2 market.
Given their lighter schedule this week, Granada would have enough time to prepare for this fixture and we see them coming out with better energy given that they are the fresher team.
However, Sevilla remain the better side overall in this matchup and we expect them to adjust right away en route to claiming their fifth win of the 2021/22 season – and maybe the top seed as well.
