International Friendly: Is USA Ready for Uruguay?

USA vs Uruguay

Wednesday’s friendly fixtures have thrown up a cracker at the Busch Stadium in St Louis where USA hosts South American big hitters Uruguay.

This International Friendly, United States vs Uruguay is a good chance for US fans to enjoy their football again after Chile and Argentina played out a stinker of a 0-0 draw in Los Angeles last week! And their own team succumbed to a 0-3 home defeat in front of a big crowd at the MetLife Stadium in New York. Mexico’s top scorer Javier Hernandez ran the Americans ragged and was on the score sheet.

So Gregg Berhalter, the USA coach, has a task in hand to prepare his side for one of the big South American teams when Oscar Tabarez brings his Uruguay to town.

You’d expect the United States vs Uruguay betting odds to back an away win and they do, but only just, and that’s because the La Celeste is without its fabled hit men Edinson Cavani and Luis Suarez.

Talking Points

USA has faith in Christian

So while the USA defence can breathe a small sigh of relief, it needs to focus on the next task in hand, and hope that their own big name can work his magic further up the pitch.

Christian Pulisic is, of course, the player the fans all come to see in the USA; he’s taken the game by storm for both club and country and is still only 20 years old. His £58m move from Borussia Dortmund to Chelsea was completed as soon as the 2018/19 season closed and the wide attacker is now preparing to take on the best defences in the Premier League.

The fee was the most ever paid for an American, almost four times the previous highest and he’s predicted to become the greatest USA player of all time. He is the one threat Tabarez won’t need to tell his players about, with his ability to make and score goals. I’m pretty sure he’ll be in the in the USA vs Uruguay highlights package, and if he isn’t I fear for the Stars and Stripes.

Jozy Altidore is out with injury and so we could see two Columbus Crew players feature, 26 year old midfield man Wil Trapp and forward Gyasi Zardes should both feature, and Zardes in particular will benefit from Pulisic’s link up play, and hope to add to his 10 goals from 52 appearances.

In the hope they can breach the Uruguay defence Fulham’s Tim Ream could be the man to marshal the USA rearguard, and though Cavani and Suarez are absent, he’ll still have plenty on his hands.

Tabarez looks forward

Suarez and Cavani aren’t going to be around forever and so Oscar Tabarez is looking for the next candidates to score the goals. This is a big chance for Maxi Gomez, who moved to Valencia in the summer transfer window, he is a clinical finisher and is ready to make his mark. There may also be a place for Jonathan Rodriguez who came off the bench and scored a last minute winner in Uruguay’s 1-2 win over Costa Rica.

La Celeste has plenty of creative flair in the middle of the park, with Juventus star Rodrigo Bentancur and Real Madrid’s Federico Valverde likely to line up together. And there could be a starting place for Lucas Torreira, who has become a key part of Arsenal’s new look side under Unai Emery.

At the back Jose Gimenez will be without his old Atletico Madrid mentor Diego Godin, but he’s already an accomplished centre back in his own right at the age of 24, with 55 appearances while weighing in with eight goals.

History

Uruguay has a rich history in the game, as two time World Cup champions and 15 time Copa America champions. USA’s best efforts have been fourth in the 1930 World Cup, and fourth in the 2016 Copa America.

La Celeste is still a quality outfit, while the USA will arguably have the best player on the pitch, and when the two teams met in a friendly back in 2002 the USA registered a 2-1 win.

So let’s take a look at the very latest odds at SBOBET and find the value.

Betting Tip

??
USA vs Uruguay Uruguay 1×2 @ 1.99
September 11 08:00 (GMT+8)

Uruguay is marginally odds on but I still reckon 1.99 is good value for a side with plenty of quality right through the team. The draw is available at 3.15 and USA is at odds of 3.80 for a win, but with three defeats on the bounce, conceding seven and scoring none, and a heavy reliance on Pulisic I’m happy to back Tabarez and his team.

USA’s struggles in front of goal and the absence of Suarez and Cavani could make Under 2.25 goals at 1.80 a decent alternative bet.

A SHORT EXPLANATION ON HOW OUR (??) BETS ARE WORTH:
?? = €20 (Highly confident) ?? = €10 (CONFIDENT) ?? = €5 (SOMEWHAT CONFIDENT)
