International Champions Cup: It’s Time for a Singapore Sling!

Juventus vs Tottenham Hotspur

Spurs vs Juventus in Singapore. What’s not to like, SBOBET fans?!

A mouth-watering International Champions Cup clash to whet the appetite for the 2019-2020 season and what could be an exciting time for both clubs.

With such an array of talent – both old and new – set to feature, there could be plenty of International Champions Cup 2019 highlights in store.

Talking Points

Spurs, who actually won this tournament last year, are making their first outing since being defeated in the Champions League final in June.

They are desperate to kick on in the new season and claim a trophy under highly-rated manager Mauricio Pochettino.

Indeed, midfielder Harry Winks feels it is only a matter of time before the club ends its trophy drought under the Argentine.

The arrival of Tanguy Ndombele, a club-record signing and the first major signing for 18 months, has excited many of the White Hart Lane faithful. He and most of his new team-mates should get at least an outing in this clash, although Eric Dier is missing due to injury.

They are up against equally exciting and determined opponents in Juventus, who are keen to make their mark in the Champions League after losing in the finals twice in the past five years despite dominating Serie A.

Of course, there are links with the Premier League and London in particular.

Old rivalries will be resumed with new Juventus coach Maurizio Sarri, fresh from departing Chelsea after 12 months, and an old foe in Aaron Ramsey, who had an impressive record for Arsenal against Spurs in north London derbies.

Add in the recruitment of highly promising Ajax captain Matthijs de Ligt, although this game could come too soon for him to appear. And of course, there’s also CR7, so you can see why excitement is building.

It will certainly be interesting to see how Ramsey links up with the likes of Dybala, Cristiano Ronaldo and Moise Kean going forward.

For the second consecutive year, Juventus have arguably pulled off the biggest transfer of the summer, beating a host of other clubs to de Ligt’s signature.

Since his debut for Ajax in 2016, his rapid rise to the top of European football has been well-documented. The chance to lean on the likes of Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini will be invaluable to the soon-to-be 20-year-old.

Another important player in this move is Ronaldo, a player de Ligt idolised as a young boy.

Before they talk Juventus up too much though, Spurs will do well to remember two of the three sides they faced last summer were fellow Serie A sides and they beat both of them. They scored a convincing 4-1 win over AS Roma in San Diego and a tighter 1-0 victory over AC Milan in Minneapolis.

This clash of champions at the National Stadium is definitely one to watch.

History

Spurs and Juve’s history competitively is brief and recent.

Just over a year ago, in fact, they faced off in a thrilling last 16 Champions League tie which Spurs should probably have won. But they were pegged back by the experienced and wily “Old Lady” of Turin.

After a first leg 2-2 draw in Italy, when two early goals from Gonzalo Higuain were pegged back by Harry Kane and Christian Eriksen, Spurs controlled spells of the second leg and led through Son Heung-Min’s opener.

However, their failure to extend their advantage proved costly as Juventus scored twice in four minutes through Higuain and Paulo Dybala to secure a 4-3 aggregate success.

Their first-ever meeting came in this competition three years ago in what was Spurs’ very first match in the International Champions Cup.

Not that Juventus went easy on them.

Dybala and Mehdi Benatia scored in the opening 15 minutes to give the Serie A side a 2-0 lead which Tottenham couldn’t overcome. Erik Lamela pulled one back in the 67th minute, but it wasn’t enough to prevent defeat.
