Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester United
It’s one of the Premier League’s most eagerly awaited fixtures, and we’re going to get a taste in the International Champions Cup as Spurs prepare to face Manchester United.
These are early days. with the English top league not due to start for another three weeks, but both Tottenham and the Red Devils have reason to be optimistic. Last season was a huge one for the Whites, finally finding a permanent home at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and reaching a Champions League final. Manchester United had rather less success.
But they have both started their ICC campaign with an impressive win, each playing attacking football, and as we start to think about our SBOBET tips for the coming season we’ll be taking a good look at this game.
Talking Points
Rare signings are no problem for Poch
Spurs have come under some criticism for a lack of signings over the past couple of seasons and there are few signs that Chairman Daniel Levy is about to splash the cash with abandon. Mauricio Pochettino has strengthened with the £55 million capture of Lyon midfield ace Tanguy Ndombele and fans hope there may be one or two to follow.
There has already been one outgoing; wing back Kieran Trippier heading off to Atletico Madrid; and midfield maestro Christian Eriksen seems determined to find another club. But talisman Harry Kane is going nowhere. The Spurs skipper scored a sensational last gasp winner against Juventus on Sunday, catching Juve keeper Wojciech Szczesny off his line and finding the net with a brilliant effort from the centre circle.
That one is right at the top of the ICC 2019 highlights … no question!
Erik Lamela and Lucas Moura were also on target, with Ndombele setting up Moura’s goal, while young defender Kyle Walker–Peters put in a superb performance to keep Cristiano Ronaldo relatively quiet, though the Bianconeri’s superstar did score. And Poch put his faith in teenagers Troy Parrott and Oliver Skipp who both looked at home in this company. And young midfield star Harry Winks appears sharp and ready for Premier League action, showcasing his range of passing and dynamic running.
Poch recently said he may have left the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium had his side won the Champions League final against Liverpool. He may still be waiting for a trophy… but this could be his season.
The signs are good for United’s young stars
Manchester United have made a good impression in pre-season, winning three games without conceding and young Mason Greenwood has captured the attention of Red Devils fans desperate to find the next Ryan Giggs or David Beckham.
Both of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s summer signings have started well, Daniel James showing fleet of foot on the wing, while Aaron Wan-Bissaka looks capable of improving Ole’s first eleven immediately.
Even Paul Pogba seems happy (at the moment). His midfield partner Juan Mata claims the big Frenchman is a positive influence on the Red Devils’ young stars, and with David de Gea looking set to sign a new deal, things may just be starting to settle in the Red half of Manchester.
History
While Spurs had an exciting climax to the 2018/19 Premier League season, Manchester United fans will be glad just to see the back of a sorry campaign. Beset by managerial change and player mood changes, the Red Devils finished in sixth place and five points adrift of a Champions League place.
Tottenham just managed to squeeze into that fourth place, one point ahead of Arsenal, while contesting the Champions league final.
It’s 11 years since Spurs won a trophy, the 2008 League Cup, and that’s a statistic which has haunted Pochettino in the five seasons he has been at the helm.
Despite its post Fergie malaise, Manchester United has continued to pick up trophies, most recently in 2017, winning the League Cup and Europa League under Jose Mourinho.
Spurs fans will do well not to look too closely at the head-to-heads. Manchester United has won 38 of the 57 meetings in the Premier League era, with Spurs managing nine wins and drawing ten.
The spoils were shared last season, the Red Devils avenging an early season 0-3 humiliation at Old Trafford, with a 0-1 win in London in January.
Man Utd has a winning streak of 3 matches, beating Leeds United and Perth before arriving at the ICC.
Betting Tip
Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester United | Over 2.75 goals @ 1.95 | |
July 25, 19:30 (GMT+8) |
This is a really tough game to call with our Spurs vs Manchester United betting tips taking stock of the odds; Spurs at 2.58 to win; a fraction ahead of Manchester United at 2.64 with the draw coming in at 3.20.
But I do think there will be goals in this match. Tottenham played out a five goal thriller with Juventus, and though Manchester United beat Inter Milan with the only goal of the game, they were denied twice by the woodwork and were free-scoring against Leeds.
