Leipzig stay on the hunt for the title while Dortmund kept their hopes alive, but the biggest story of the weekend that sent online gambling fans and betting websites into euphoria was Bayern’s eight-goal demolition of Hamburg.
It was a little reminder from Robert Lewandowski why he is the best striker in the business and a huge statement from Bayern why they are the team to beat in the Bundesliga.
Wolfsburg 1-2 Werder Bremen
This match was a crucial battle in the relegation dogfight, and the River Islanders didn’t waste their chance as they attacked furiously right from the off. Serge Gnabry found the back of the net in ten minutes before adding a second shortly after with a clean finish following a set-piece. Borja Mayoral pulled one back for the Wolves, but they failed to overcome a leaky backline as the visitors held firm.
Bayern Munich 8-0 Hamburger SV
History repeats itself as Bayern thrashed Hamburg with eight goals, just like how they did it two years ago on the same stage. Robert Lewandowski headlined the Bavarians’ attack with a clinical hat-trick, while Arturo Vidal, David Alaba and Arjen Robben were also on target. Kingsley Coman, meanwhile, provided additional scoring punch as he grabbed a double off the bench.
It was Bayern’s biggest win in the Carlo Ancelotti era, making them even bigger favourites to win at Cologne next week where they are at odds of 1X2 @ 1.49.
Bayer Leverkusen 0-2 Mainz 05
Bayer were still rusty after their Champions League defeat to Atletico in midweek as the visiting O-Fives bagged two early goals en route to victory. It took just three minutes for Stefan Bell to put Mainz ahead, and Levin Oztunali doubled their lead eight minutes later with a free-kick that bounced in at the far post. The game was pretty much over after that with Bayer unable to break through the visitors’ robust defence.
Darmstadt 98 1-2 Augsburg
A Raul Bobadilla strike five minutes from time piled more misery on Darmstadt who stay at the bottom and 10 points adrift of safety. Augsburg’s Paul Verhaegh converted from the penalty spot to cancel out Marcel Heller’s 47th-minute opener; and although substitute Terrence Boyd had a chance to push Darmstadt up, it was Bobadilla who had the last laugh.
Freiburg 0-3 Borussia Dortmund
BVB made it 12 wins in a row against Freiburg, courtesy of a goal from Sokratis and a second-half brace from Bundesliga’s top scorer Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. Freiburg never really threatened as Dortmund controlled the game throughout, and it was only a matter of time before Sokratis and Aubameyang put their names on the scoresheet.
RB Leipzig 3-1 Koln
Leipzig remain realistic contenders for the title after taking down Koln for their ninth home win of the season. It was a deserving victory for the Bulls as they came out firing on all cylinders, with Emil Forsberg and Timo Werner looking dangerous every time they move forward. Though, Leipzig are also lucky with Koln’s Dominic Maroh unintentionally turning into his own net at the half-hour mark.
Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side certainly appears ready to contend, so it should be easy for them to beat an Asian Handicap -0.50 @ 2.02 when they face Augsburg in the Matchday 23 opener.
Hertha BSC 2-0 Eintracht Frankfurt
The Berliners moved on from their frustrating added-time draw to Bayern last week and returned to winning ways with a convincing victory against Frankfurt. There were only a few clear-cut chances to score in the game, and the Eagles didn’t show much life on the offence after Vedad Ibisevic gave the hosts the lead. Vladimir Darida then sealed the game with a late header, taking advantage of Haris Seferovic’s 78th-minute ejection.
Hertha boosted their European hopes with the win as they are now fifth in the table.
Ingolstadt 0-2 Borussia Monchengladbach
It was another brilliant showing from Gladbach who continued their resurgence under Coach Dieter Hecking. Captain Lars Stindl—fresh from a hat-trick in Fiorentina—was on target again for the high-flying visitors as he broke the deadlock in 60 minutes, before Andre Hahn sealed matters in added time. Ingolstadt, on the other hand, are still 17th and in danger of relegation with just 18 points.
Schalke 04 1-1 Hoffenheim
Schalke was terrific for the most part, but Julian Nagelsmann’s men remained resilient and got rewarded with a point in the closing stages. The Royal Blues clearly had the better chances after Alessandro Schopf propelled them in front within five minutes, and they could have doubled their lead after the break. However, Hoffenheim’s patience and aggressiveness paid off when Sebastian Rudy equalised 11 minutes before the death of time.
