Austria 1-1 Finland
This was meant to be a comfortable home win but a late equaliser for battling Finland upset the betting odds and sent the Austria fans home somewhat disappointed.
After dominating for long periods Marcel Koller’s team thought they’d won it when Marco Arnautovic struck. However, a Fredrik Jensen equaliser stunned the home crowd. With pre-match Asian Handicap Betting, Austria were still odds on with a one goal handicap, such is their perceived superiority over a lowly Finland side ranked 99th by FIFA.
To be fair, in a quiet first half hour Austria didn’t really look like penetrating the Finland defence, with David Alaba and Valentino Lazaro having the only two efforts worthy of note in the early stages. And on the half hour, Finland came alive with a flurry of corners to show the Austrians they were in a match. That prompted a more purposeful home attack and David Alaba forced a save low in the corner, followed by another shot on target from Lazaro and a second blocked effort from the Saltzburg forward just before the break.
Austria brought striker Marko Arnautovic on to try to prompt something and the Stoke City man did just that on 62 minutes smashing home from close range.
That should have been that for Austria but the lead lasted only until the 76th minute when Thomas Lam teed up Fredrik Jensen to fire home from just outside the box. Austria came close with two late headers while Jensen probed again at the other end for the happy Fins.
