Fantastic Defence Wins a Big Point for Baggies

Tottenham Hotspur 1-1 West Bromwich Albion

In as brave a performance their fans could wish for, West Brom won an unlikely point at Wembley against high-flying Spurs.

With Baggies manager Tony Pulis sacked after a run of only two wins in 21 football games, this was a match football betting fans expected the hosts to win easily. But an early Salomon Rondon goal gave West Brom the boost they needed to grab a draw against imposing betting odds. But for a late Harry Kane strike it could have been a win.

Ironically, it was a defensive display Pulis would have been proud of, built on the early goal which knocked the wind out of Spurs. It took just four minutes for the Wembley crowd to go quiet when Jake Livermore put Rondon through. The striker easily saw off a challenge from Davinson Sanchez and rolled the ball gently into the corner with Hugo Lloris rooted to the spot.

That seemed to baffle Mauricio Pochettino’s Spurs and their usually free-flowing attack spluttered, with Son Heung-min the most likely looking player to trouble Ben Foster in the West Brom net. Harry Kane tried his luck from distance a couple of times, but the well-drilled visiting defence held firm, with Jonny Evans in superb form.

Spurs picked up the pace in the second half and Kieran Trippier crossed for Dele Alli on 70 minutes, but the out-of-form England man couldn’t quite get the vital touch. Then, on 74, Harry Kane finally drew Spurs level with a beautiful cushioned finish from an Alli cross.

Then it was all Spurs and the Baggies narrowly survived a penalty box scramble after Eriksen smashed a free-kick into the wall, and as time ran out Alli aimed a cross towards Kane but Evans was there again to head clear.

West Brom almost snatched a shock win on 95 minutes but Rondon missed when he really should have scored. But this is a point for the Baggies to be proud of, and something to build on, post-Pulis.

Spurs are in danger of dropping out of the top four.
