Champions League is the Prize for Italy’s Best

We’re down to ten remaining Serie A football games, and it’s all bubbling up nicely at the top. The Old Lady is still fancied by football betting pundits to lift the Scudetto again but the chasing pack is gathering pace.

Roma, Napoli, Lazio and Inter all won well last week and have eyes on the Champions League places; Roma and Napoli, especially, are still hoping Juve may yet slip up.

WEEK 29 SUNDAY:

Torino vs Inter Milan

Mauro Icardi and Ever Banega scored a hat-trick each in last week’s destruction of rivals Atalanta, and Inter are at betting odds of 2.00 to win again in Turin. Torino keeper Joe Hart is still deciding on his future as this season is in danger of fizzling out for his team. Inter are two wins away from the coveted third place.

AC Milan vs Genoa

The Rossoneri were desperately unlucky to leave Juventus empty-handed last week, having matched the Champions for 96 minutes. A Europa place, at least, is well within reach. Genoa’s season is over, safe from the drop and miles from the top; this is a case of playing for pride and contracts. Milan are at 1.93 to win with a -0.75 handicap.

Empoli vs Napoli

The goals of Dries Mertens and skilful support of Marek Hamsik and Lorenzo Insigne (they’ve scored 39 between them) have put more pressure on Roma, and I can’t see much of a problem for Napoli away to an Empoli side on a run of five consecutive defeats. Is second place beckoning for the Light Blues?

Sampdoria vs Juventus

Milan saw some hope until Paulo Dybala converted a 97th-minute penalty to snatch three points for the Bianconeri last week. Max Allegri has apparently enquired about Leicester’s unsettled star Riyad Mahrez. In the meantime, a trip to ninth-placed Sampdoria, unbeaten in seven, should keep him occupied.

Cagliari vs Lazio

Lazio are in great shape in fourth and just four points behind the Champions League places after a 3-1 win over Torino last week. Simone Inzaghi’s boys are on a five-match winning run in all competitions. They visit a Cagliari side without a home win in three but safe in 15th place.

Atalanta vs Pescara

Well, what a shock that was for Atalanta…a 7-1 drubbing by rivals Inter! It followed a home draw with Fiorentina and the sixth-placed club must get back in the saddle quickly and back to winning ways. There could be a nasty backlash on the way for bottom club Pescara.

Crotone vs Fiorentina

La Viola followed that welcome draw at Atalanta with a home win against Cagliari, and now has a great chance for more joy at 19th-placed Crotone. The hosts have picked up a solitary point along with four defeats in the past month and the trap door is creaking open.

Bologna vs Chievo

Fourteenth-placed Bologna ended a fruitless run with a scrappy 1-0 win in Sassuolo. It doesn’t matter how the points come, as long as they come. Chievo are on a sequence of WLWLW to hover in 11th. If you like patterns, a home win is at 2.35!

WEEK 29 MONDAY:

Udinese vs Palermo

Eighteenth-placed Palermo, too, have eked a single point from five games in the past month, and are a little lucky still to be just seven points from survival. Udinese saw off Palermo’s fellow strugglers Pescara last week and have the taste for blood.

AS Roma vs Sassuolo

Four defeats in the last six in all competitions have come at a bad time for Luciano Spalletti’s Roma. And while big striker Edin Dzeko has lost some momentum in recent weeks, he has bagged his 20th league goal which is some achievement. Inconsistent Sassuolo are strong on the road, winning three of their last four away.
