Bundesliga: Another Goalfest Between Gladbach and Leverkusen Awaits

Borussia Monchengladbach will host Bayer Leverkusen in what should be an entertaining match, as the title of this article suggests, considering what happened in last week’s Bundesliga 2023 results.

The Foals are coming off a 4-4 draw against Augsburg, while Die Werkself just defeated DFL-Supercup champions RB Leipzig in a five-goal thriller on Saturday.

At 6’3”, Cvancara is an imposing presence inside the box. He has the profile of a classic central striker, a la Thuram, and he’s agile for a man of his size.

In terms of finishing, he’s far from a finished article, but he’s great at using his physicality to hold up play and draw multiple defenders. And yes, he just turned 23 years old a few days ago, so time is on his side.

Cvancara had a Bundesliga debut to remember since he registered a brace against Augsburg, making him the second player in Borussia Monchengladbach history to score more than one goal on his Bundesliga debut since Peter Meyer’s hat-trick against Schalke in 1967.

With the likes of Nico Elvedi, Hannes Wolf, Stefan Lainer, Christoph Kramer, and Manu Kone on the sidelines for this weekend’s match, there’s a ton of pressure on Cvancara’s broad shoulders to guide the Foals to their first win this season.

Leverkusen continue to get better under Alonso

Die Werkself have emerged as the outside favourites for the Bundesliga title, thanks to their resurgence under Xabi Alonso. Since the former Real Madrid star took over at the helm, they have become one of the most dynamic sides in the German top-flight.

And they continued their free-scoring ways last weekend with a statement victory against RB Leipzig, with Jeremie Frimpong, Jonathan Tah, and Florian Wirtz all finding the back of the net.

Frimpong is the man to keep an eye on in the visiting team because of his uncanny ability to create attacking opportunities in the full-back position.

Last season, he had eight Bundesliga goals and seven assists. And with Moussa Diaby leaving for Aston Villa earlier this summer, Frimpong will have a bigger role in Alonso’s tactics.

Bayer Leverkusen are undefeated in their last seven Bundesliga meetings with Borussia Monchengladbach (W6, D1). Die Werkself were on a six-game winning streak against the Foals up until a 2-2 draw at the BayArena on matchday 33 last season.

Die Werkself have also scored more Bundesliga goals versus the Foals than against any other club (157). Since getting promoted to the Bundesliga in 1979, Borussia Monchengladbach have conceded more league goals against Bayer Leverkusen than against any other side.
