Borussia Monchengladbach vs Bayer Leverkusen
It wasn’t too long ago when these two clubs were considered outside title contenders here in the Bundesliga. But after a poor run in recent weeks, Borussia Monchengladbach and Bayer Leverkusen find themselves in a much different situation.
Both clubs are now desperate to get back on their feet as they go head-to-head at the Borussia Park this weekend.
Bayer Leverkusen sit at the sixth spot of the standings with 37 points while Borussia Monchengladbach are at ninth with 33 points.
February hasn’t been a great month for both sides since they have been overtaken by the likes of VfL Wolfsburg, Borussia Dortmund, and Eintracht Frankfurt for the coveted European qualification spots.
Saying that a win here will be a shot in the arm is quite an understatement, but that should provide enough motivation for these two teams to try and bring their A-game this Saturday night.
Talking Points
Borussia Monchengladbach are in shambles
The Foals were never the same after receiving the Bundesliga 2021 news that their manager Marco Rose is set for a move to Borussia Dortmund after this term.
Marco Rose was a beloved figure in Borussia Park, which is why the fans and players alike felt betrayed with this development.
The 44-year-old coach led the Foals to a fourth-placed finish last season and has brought them back into the Champions League after a four-year hiatus.
And because of the team’s promising campaign under his tutelage, supporters probably thought that Rose was in it for the long haul to try and bring back the glory days of the 1970’s.
Players may deny that Rose’s impending departure has affected their form, but a month without a win suggests otherwise.
Ironically, their last win dates back to late January when they beat Rose’s future employers in Dortmund via a 4-2 tally. But league defeats against Koln, Mainz, and RB Leipzig followed after that.
Manchester City capitalised on the Foals’ slumping form in their Champions League tie, while Borussia Dortmund showed them the exit door recently in the DFB-Pokal quarterfinals.
For Die Fohlen to get back on their feet, their stars need to show up for this big match ahead.
Lars Stindl, Marcus Thuram, Alassane Plea, Jonas Hofmann, and Florian Neuhaus all need to click for them to have a chance.
Bayer Leverkusen need to come out of their shell
Die Werkself may have only lost once in their last four league fixtures, but they need to do a better job in order to secure their Champions League spot by season’s end.
Since their loss against Bayern Munich before the winter break, Leverkusen have been a shell of their former selves as wins are hard to come by.
They have dropped points against Mainz and Augsburg, while they were embarrassed in the Europa League by Young Boys in a 6-3 aggregate.
Things have not gone to plan for a team that had high aspirations prior to this season. While Peter Bosz’s side is disappointed with their recent games, they aren’t necessarily in a worse position than they should be.
History
Borussia Monchengladbach and Bayer Leverkusen have faced off in 40 games prior to this Saturday.
The visitors have the advantage in the head-to-heads with 20 wins, while the hosts have won nine times along with 11 draws.
We are hopeful that we can get something similar to their previous matchup last November as both teams engaged in a seven-goal thriller.
After two goals from Lars Stindl and one from Valentino Lazaro, Bayer Leverkusen came back from behind through goals from Leon Bailey, Lucas Alario, and Julian Baumgartlinger.
Betting Tip
Borussia Monchengladbach vs Bayer Leverkusen | Bayer Leverkusen Asian Handicap 0.00 @ 2.08 | |
March 6, 22:30 (GMT+8) |
The latest Bundesliga 2021 odds here at SBOTOP expect this game to go down the wire this weekend, which is expected since both are desperate to gain points.
Borussia Monchengladbach have the slight edge since they’re priced at 2.58, whereas Bayer Leverkusen are pegged at 2.70 and a draw is at 3.20 in the 1×2 market.
These two teams are evenly matched on paper and it’s hard to rule out a draw. However, I may have to give the advantage for Bayer Leverkusen here since they have the slightly better form.
Borussia Monchengladbach’s problems go way beyond the pitch. And with their head coach having one foot out of the door, the Foals simply lack the inspiration for them to turn around their campaign.
