Bundesliga: Advantage Bayern!

FC Bayern remain top of the Bundesliga tonight, after another round in the German top-flight threw up some big results and outstanding performances. Here at SBOTOP we backed Die Bayern to sweep Bremen aside and so they did, strolling to a 3-1 victory.

Second-placed Red Bull lost ground as they were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Eintracht Frankfurt who remain in fourth place. Meanwhile, at the bottom end of the table Arminia Bielefeld were the weekend winners, climbing out of the drop zone.

The prolific Robert Lewandowski was on target for the Bavarians yet again to make it 32 goals this season from just 24 games, and he became the German top flight’s joint-second top scorer of all time, joining Schalke’s Klaus Fischer on 268 Bundesliga goals. He has a way to go to catch Bayern and Germany legend Gerd Muller who plundered an astonishing 365 goals in the league.

Bayern took hold of this clash with goals from Leon Goretzka and Serge Gnabry and Lewandowski had already hit the woodwork twice before he poked home the third. Niclas Fullkrug scored a late consolation for well-beaten Werder.

The Bundesliga 2021 betting odds are backing the Bavarians, heavily odds on to make it nine consecutive league titles and in this form who would argue against that?

Well, a few people in Leipzig might, but their hopes took a blow on Sunday.

Of all this weekend’s Bundesliga 2021 results Red Bull’s clash at home to Eintracht Frankfurt was the most eagerly anticipated as the clash presented Die Roten Bullen with an opportunity to stay on the heels of the champions. And it looked good, after a cagey first half, for Julian Nagelsmann’s side when they went ahead immediately after the break through Emil Forsberg. Daichi Kamada equalised for Frankfurt and then the visitors withstood an onslaught from Red Bull.

Forsberg came close with a free-kick which whistled past the angle of post and crossbar and Eintracht keeper Kevin Trapp made a great save to deny Christopher Nkunku, as Red Bull drifted four points behind Bayern.

Wolfsburg will be hard to shift

Bundesliga: Wout Weghorst scored in the 51st minute of VfL Wolfsburg's 5-0 win against Schalke 04
Wout Weghorst scored VfL Wolfsburg’s second goal against Schalke 04

Die Wolfe have a tight grip on third place in the league table and they were utterly ruthless in a 5-0 destruction of doomed Schalke on Saturday. The visitors, bottom of the table with just ten points helped Wolfsburg on their way when former Arsenal defender Shkodran Mustafi turned the ball into his own net. The defender’s mishap is sure to amuse Gunners fans, many of whom viewed their former player as an accident waiting to happen.

Wout Weghorst scored his 16th goal of the season and Die Wolfe retain a six-point cushion to fifth place and are sure to improve on last season’s seventh-placed finish.

Champions League back on for BVB

Die Schwarzgelben are in the last eight of this year’s European flagship competition after seeing off Sevilla 5-4 on aggregate in their Round of 16 clash. And they have climbed back into top-four contention in the league, thanks to a comfortable 2-0 win over Hertha Berlin. Dortmund were in control of this game throughout and their superiority was rewarded when Julian Brandt opened the scoring and Youssoufa Moukoko added a late second.

Three wins from the last four games have taken BVB up to the fifth place and right back in the hunt for a 2021/22 Champions League spot, which they really need to give incoming head coach Marco Rose a chance of success on the biggest stages in Europe.

Hertha’s Vladimir Darida took an early bath, seeing red for a poor tackle on Marco Reus as the visitors’ day went from bad to worse.

Hertha Berlin in trouble while Arminia have new hope

Defeat to Dortmund left Hertha in a perilous position, in 16th place and now level on 21 points with FSV Mainz, who earned a priceless victory with a 1-0 win over Freiburg as Robin Quaison hit a late winner for Die Nulfunfer.

Things became worse for the Berliners when new boys DSC Arminia Bielefeld pulled off a stunning victory away to Bayer Leverkusen on Sunday, storming two goals ahead through Ritsu Doan and Masaya Okugawa before Patrik Schick scored a late reply for Leverkusen. That victory meant Bielefeld leapfrogged both Hertha and Mainz into 15th place; and with some momentum building they have given themselves a real chance of earning a second season at the top table.
