After a week packed with drama and shocks in La Liga, these big matches are coming thick and fast.
It’s a crucial weekend for Real Madrid after losing to Real Betis. Another bad result and betting websites will be looking at Los Blancos with rare caution. And what a game we have in Madrid; where third plays second as Atletico and Sevilla try to keep pace with leaders Barcelona.
WEEK 6 SATURDAY:
Atletico Madrid vs Sevilla
Atletico is fancied to win this epic battle at betting odds of 1.60, with the draw at 3.95 and Sevilla at 5.20. It took a late screamer from Jesus Navas against Las Palmas to keep Eduardo Berizzo’s men second and Diego Simeone’s Atletico is right in the hunt after Yannick Carrasco scored in Bilbao in a 2-1 win. With both teams unbeaten something could give.
Alaves vs Real Madrid
Imagine the meltdown in Madrid if Los Blancos manage to give Alaves its first point of the season, and a defeat is unthinkable. Zinedine Zidane has tried to calm his players and increasingly anxious fans as they try to stop a seven-point gap to the top widening any further.
WEEK 6 SUNDAY:
Malaga vs Athletic Bilbao
Malaga is the only team below Alaves in the table, largely thanks to a 5-0 midweek thumping in Valencia; So Athletic Club will see this as an opportunity to dust off defeat to Atletico Madrid and improve on their tenth position.
Girona vs Barcelona
It’s always a thrill for football fans to see Lionel Messi in action but I’m not sure the Girona defence will see it that way! The hosts managed to keep Leganes out in midweek but it will need a minor miracle to stop Messi adding to his NINE goals so far this season. Barca is at odds of 1.98 with a -1.75 goal handicap to win and that looks good to me.
RCD Espanyol vs Deportivo La Coruna
This isn’t the type of fixture I’d expect to be a relegation tussle, and it is early days, but 16th placed Espanyol will see this as a chance to move away from trouble. Depor is a point behind and in the drop zone, but grabbed their first nervy win in midweek against Alaves, who else?
Getafe vs Villarreal
Getafe’s Angel Rodriguez grabbed a late point against Celta on Thursday and that leaves the hosts in 14th place and they entertain the Yellow Submarine, which has had a stop-start opening to the season and is looking for consistency.
WEEK 6 MONDAY:
Las Palmas vs Leganes
It’s off to sunny Gran Canaria for Madrid’s smallest team as 11th placed Leganes takes on 12th placed Las Palmas. Last season the hosts were rampant on home territory and that could spell trouble for Leganes, without a win in three.
Eibar vs Celta Vigo
Eibar will be looking at Girona with some sympathy this weekend as the last team to face Messi and Barca, capitulating 6-1, and Celta Vigo will hope the hosts are still shell-shocked as they themselves hope to improve on a shaky start as they sit outside the drop zone on goal difference only.
Real Sociedad vs Valencia
That free-scoring home performance moved Valencia up to fourth and it’s a long time since the demanding Mestalla faithful have been so happy. And that nudged Real Sociedad down to sixth after they lost their second successive match, this time to Levante. Both teams can make a big statement of intent here.
WEEK 6 TUESDAY:
Real Betis vs Levante
Both teams in the Monday fixture had cause for celebration this week as Antonio Sanabria nodded in the shock winner for Real Betis against Real Madrid, while Levante moved up to fifth with a cracking 3-0 home victory against Real Sociedad. Both are on nine points.
