Love Hurts: Injuries Take the Best Players from Us

If there’s one thing NBA fans and live betting circles hate the most, it’s injuries. Not only do they immediately impact the betting odds of a game you’re watching, it also robs the affected team of their potential to be great. Injuries are the one thing the league can do without.

Golden State fans surely understand what I’m talking about as making a bet online for the current Dubs is equal to throwing your money out the window. Kevin Durant joins fellow All-Stars Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson on the sidelines with a fractured right rib. He is expected to be out for at least two weeks.

The Dubs now have less than half of their firepower when they face the Phoenix Suns. While they will still likely take the W, they are likely out of the race for the first seed. The Houston Rockets will happily continue winning as the Warriors struggle with injuries.

The Warriors aren’t the only ones afflicted by the injury bug: the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Boston Celtics also see their disabled list chock-full of players. It will be interesting to see how Tyronn Lue, Brad Stevens, and Steve Kerr will handle these roster shortages.

Of course, injuries aren’t only limited to the physical kind. Depression and mental health is an issue that affects our favourite players.

DeMar DeRozan paved the way for the entire league to acknowledge and start talking about depression. Kevin Love published a brilliant piece about his own struggles, and Portland Trail Blazer guard Shabazz Napier gave his own two cents.

“At the end of the day, I think people sometimes don’t realize how close we (NBA players) are as average people,” he told the press. “We deal with the same problems no matter what.”

The league’s stars are slowly transitioning to becoming influencers off the court, and many are excited with the kind of progressive thinking they are leading. Players, coaches and people in the basketball community support these players in every way they can.

We can all agree that injuries, be it physical or mental, keep our favourite NBA players from being their best. We can only hope that our stars will come back stronger and continue to give us what we love: high-octane and exciting basketball.
