Now That was Exciting!

It was quite the live betting weekend.

Another mega-money signing, a fans’ protest, and a debut goal and sending-off all in the same movement.

Who says football games in La Liga don’t keep you, sports betting fans, on the edge of your seats?!

Atletico Madrid 2-0 Getafe

Back with a bang!

In many ways, this was typical Diego Costa.

Scoring on his debut and then getting sent off – a second yellow card – for his celebration was the story.

Angel Correa opened the scoring as Atletico stay a distant second.

Valencia 2-1 Girona

Valencia stay third but had to come from behind to win the contest against their spirited opponents.

Dani Parejo netted the winner from the penalty spot.

There was even time for boss Marcelino to give Luciano Vietto his debut.

Las Palmas 1-2 Eibar

How the Canary Island club could do with the return of Jese Rodriguez, as speculated, for the second half of the campaign,

They remain at the foot of the table after a late show from Eibar rendered Jonathan Viera’s 32nd-minute penalty scant consolation.

Fabian Orellana and Sergi Enrich scored twice in five minutes to keep Eibar in seventh spot.

They have now taken 19 points from a possible tally of 21.

Sevilla 3-5 Real Betis

A thrilling Seville city derby but a nightmare start for new home boss Vincenzo Montella.

His first experience of La Liga action not only ended in defeat but also led to a training ground protest from fans that are unhappy at the running of the club.

The thrill-a-minute for Betis started when Fabian Ruiz fired them in front inside 22 seconds, and they rounded off an error-ridden but no less exciting contest through Cristian Tello in the sixth minute of stoppage time!

Leganes 1-0 Real Sociedad

There was some controversy but Leganes will not care one bit.

Indeed, they leapfrogged Sociedad thanks to Gabriel Pires’ 75th-minute finish – possibly from an offside position.

It briefly moved them up to eighth, despite being just their second league victory since mid-October.

Barcelona 3-0 Levante

Another weekend to remember for Barca.

A comfortable victory included another goal from Lionel Messi, on his 400th appearance for the club, and maintained their nine-point lead at the summit.

It was his 365th La Liga goal for the Catalans to equal the great Gerd Muller’s goal record in a top European league.

The Argentine maestro will have more to come of course, as will Barca, with the latest jewel in their crown Philippe Coutinho.

Athletic Bilbao 2-0 Alaves

Alaves battled hard but Bilbao were too strong.

A goal in each half from Xabier Etxeita and the evergreen Aritz Aduriz, from the penalty spot, did the damage.

It’s a boost for Bilbao, unbeaten through December, as they chase a European berth.

Villarreal 1-1 Deportivo La Coruna

Alaves have slipped into the drop zone after this result.

Enes Unal’s first-half opener was on course to move the Yellow Submarine up into fifth spot.

But six minutes from time Romanian frontman Florin Andone headed a leveller to give joy to the visitors.

Celta Vigo 2-2 Real Madrid

The top team in Europe and on planet football will certainly not be retaining their La Liga crown this season.

That was widely known even before this entertaining draw left them 16 points off the summit.

The only bright spot for Madrid on a night in which Vigo showed their undoubted talent – glimpses of which have been too sporadic – was the return from injury of Gareth Bale who netted twice in three minutes.

Maxi Gomez’s header eight minutes from time earned the Galicians a point.

Malaga 0-1 RCD Espanyol

An early blow at the Estadio La Rosaleda from which the strugglers were unable to recover.

Sergi Darder’s neat sixth-minute finish was enough as Espanyol climb to 14th.

Malaga remain five points from safety.
