But it certainly helps! The January transfer window is about to open to prompt yet another spending frenzy of the ambitious and desperate.
Manchester City’s 15 point lead at the top has led betting websites to slash the odds on a Sky Blue title, and that’s led the chasing pack to compare their squads with no little envy. So it’s spend, spend, spend time; but before all that we have another great set of fixtures to enjoy with Premier League betting.
WEEK 21 SATURDAY:
Chelsea vs Stoke City
There was a time when Roman Abramovich’s millions could buy a league title, but Antonio Conte must content himself with battling for second place for the time being. Stoke has picked up four points from two games to edge away from the drop zone, but I think the Blues will be far too good for Mark Hughes men.
Huddersfield Town vs Burnley
Now here are two teams which can prove what can be done on a budget. The Terriers have amazed everyone with their survival efforts while Burnley has foiled Liverpool, Chelsea, Spurs and Manchester United already this season. Town still has work to do though, just six points above the drop while the Clarets eye a Europa place.
Bournemouth vs Everton
Everton’s former boss Ronald Koeman spent big in the summer and look where that got him! Big Sam has steadied the ship though and taken the Toffees to ninth, on an unbeaten run, including four away games, while the Cherries are struggling in 18th and without a win in four home matches.
Watford FC vs Swansea City
Well Swansea have potted their manager and just hired one who has been shoved through the exit at Sheffield Wednesday. New boss Carlos Carvalhal insists he isn’t there to prepare for a promotion push next year, but he’ll need to get results quickly to convince anyone. Watford away is a big test after the Hornets have just beaten Leicester.
Newcastle United vs Brighton & Hove Albion
This clash of the new boys is a relegation six pointer. Newcastle sits just a point above the drop zone while the Seagulls have three points more in 12th. Both have won just one in six and are finding it difficult to score… so this will be a nervy affair.
WEEK 21 SUNDAY:
Manchester United vs Southampton
After failing to beat Burnley Jose Mourinho has said he needs to lay out more than the £280m plus he’s invested in his squad so far. So Pogba, Lukaku, Matic and Co better show what they can do against a Southampton side without their best striker, Charlie Austin, and their departed defensive lynchpin Virgil Van Dijk, now a £75m capture for Liverpool.
Crystal Palace vs Manchester City
Pep Guardiola’s stars are breaking records every week as they continue their epic season, now with a winning run of 16 in the league. Roy Hodgson has got the Eagles flying, with three wins and three draws in six home games (before Thursday’s visit of Arsenal) and it will be a special day if they can keep their own great run going.
WEEK 21 MONDAY:
West Bromwich Albion vs Arsenal
The Gunners follow up their visit to Palace with another away day, but this to a Baggies team in terrible form, in 19th and with just two points to show for their last five games. Arsenal must win again to keep their Champions League campaign in the right direction.
