King David’s the Man to Win the Big Football Games

Arsene Wenger is quite right to think 75 percent possession and 33 shots should win a match, but it’s no guarantee if you’re facing Manchester United’s David de Gea!

The Red Devils delivered a knockout blow to the Gunners’ fading title hopes, as their keeper delivered a world-class performance. And in another great week for Premier League betting fans, Manchester City won to stay eight points clear at the top while there were victories for chasers Chelsea and Liverpool.

Arsenal 1-3 Manchester United

Pre-match betting odds suggested David de Gea would have a busy afternoon… and he was ready. The Spanish stopper made 14 saves as the Gunners rained shots down on his goal. At the other end United was ruthless, punishing Arsenal’s mistakes as Jesse Lingard helped himself to a double; and Jose briefly cracked a smile!

Manchester City 2-1 West Ham United

City strolled around in the first half, rather uncharacteristically, and was punished when defender Angelo Ogbonna headed the Hammers in front. The Sky Blues were duly awakened and Nicolas Otamendi restored parity on 57 minutes to set up half an hour of one-way football. David Silva finished beautifully, on 82 minutes, ensuring the win.

Chelsea 3-1 Newcastle United

An Eden Hazard double sandwiched a strike from Chelsea’s leading scorer Alvaro Morata to see off former boss Rafa Benitez and his Geordie army. That wasn’t the full story though, as Dwight Gayle had given Newcastle an early lead. But the result keeps Chelsea in the title race while Rafa is looking downwards.

Brighton & Hove Albion 1-5 Liverpool

Liverpool go fourth after a five-star display at Brighton. Roberto Firmino scored twice and Emre Can headed home as the Reds took control; and while a Glenn Murray penalty gave the Seagulls some hope at 1-3, a late strike from Philippe Coutinho and a Lewis Dunk own goal completed the rout.

Leicester City 1-0 Burnley

Demarai Gray’s sixth-minute goal was the difference between these two sides in a well-contested match. He crashed into the post as he scored and that set the tone for a no-holds-barred encounter. But the Clarets couldn’t break down the Foxes’ defence while Gray came close to adding a second.

Everton 2-0 Huddersfield Town

Sam Allardyce was, predictably, praising his team’s defensive and organisational quality after he oversaw the Toffees for the first time. The big man knows you have to score though, and Gylfi Sigurdsson and Dominic Calvert-Lewin did the honours to lift Everton into the top half. Big Sam’s done his job already!

Bournemouth 1-1 Southampton

Honours even on the south coast as the Cherries and Saints cancelled each other out in this Sunday lunchtime mid-table clash. Ryan Fraser gave the hosts a first-half lead before Charlie Austin equalised on the hour, and the Southampton striker had a golden chance to snatch a late win but fluffed his chance.

West Bromwich Albion 0-0 Crystal Palace

Well, Alan Pardew’s reign at West Brom started with a goalless draw; and it looked like a real relegation clash as neither side looked to have the quality to create an opening. But Baggies keeper Ben Foster had his heart in his mouth when he crashed into Palace star man Wilfried Zaha, only to see the ref wave play on.

Stoke City 2-1 Swansea City

Stoke moved a little further away from danger with a useful win, thanks to clinical goals from Xherdan Shaqiri and Mame Biram Diouf, but not before Wilfried Bony had given the Swans the lead with an equally smart finish on three minutes. But Paul Clement’s team has hit rock bottom.
