This was a Night for Heroes

It was a night to savour in so many ways.

A night in which the proud institution that is Tottenham Hotspur took on the world’s best team and showed them how to play.

Yes, sports betting fans, Real Madrid will still qualify for the Champions League knockout stages and the betting odds will still make them one of the favourites to lift the top prize.

But football games like tonight at Wembley show why there is so much magic and romance in this beautiful game of ours.

Tottenham Hotspur 3-1 Real Madrid

It’s not often the European champions are overwhelmed but they were here.

Madrid may have had much more possession and almost twice as many shots as the hosts.

But the technical ability, the tempo and the relentless approach from Spurs was a sight to behold on a night the majority of those crammed inside Wembley can now say ‘I was there when…’.

Borussia Dortmund 1-1 Apoel Nicosia

To have 78 per cent possession and not win could be deemed unfortunate.

To muster 27 shots and not win could be deemed careless.

Dortmund are almost certainly going out after being held by the Cypriot minnows for the second time in a fortnight.

FC Porto 3-1 RB Leipzig

Revenge for Porto who now leapfrog the Germans in the standings.

Group G remains wide open with both these sides realistically needing to win their final two group matches to determine who progresses.

Maxi Pereira’s stoppage time goal sealed this one.

Besiktas 1-1 AS Monaco

Breakthrough for Monaco?

Well not quite but at least they remain in the competition.

Last season’s semi-finalists are hanging on by a thread, yet still harbour a slim chance of qualifying.

Napoli 2-4 Manchester City

It ebbed and flowed one way then the other but ultimately City’s riches proved too much for the Italian league leaders.

Such is the wealth of talent at their disposal, Pep Guardiola’s team could even afford to concede two goals to a Napoli side now in real danger of missing out on a place in the knockout stages.

How fitting that the winner came from the boot of Sergio Aguero whose 178th goal in a City shirt – they have arrived in just 264 games – made him the club’s all-time top scorer.

A fitting honour for a true world class talent.

Shakhtar Donetsk 3-1 Feyenoord

All but there.

Goals from Facundo Ferreyra and Marlos fired the Ukranians to victory.

Can this be the year they equal or better their best ever run in the competition – they secured a quarter-final spot in 2011.

Liverpool 3-0 NK Maribor

It took longer than they’d have liked and for the second match running they saw a penalty saved.

But in the end, the gulf between the sides was too large.

Once Mohamed Salah broke the deadlock four minutes after the interval, this was only going one way.

Sevilla 2-1 Spartak Moscow

How important Ever Banega’s spectacular strike could be may not be known for a month – but it will likely prove crucial.

For the Andalusians now control their own destiny again in Group E.

Los Rojiblancos were too stylish for Spartak.
