Roy Hodgson could have been forgiven for looking shell-shocked after his first match in charge of Crystal Palace. In losing this one – a big win for the inconsistent Saints – the Eagles became the first club in top-flight history to lose their opening five games without scoring.
The return of key players should help but can’t come soon enough.
Huddersfield Town 1-1 Leicester City
A frantic start to the second half and a match the Terriers will feel unfortunate not to have won.
Jamie Vardy’s penalty earned the 2016 champions a point at the John Smith Stadium, four minutes after debutant Laurent Depoitre had fired home the opener.
Huddersfield’s home form – and they have terrific backing – could be a real asset this season.
Liverpool 1-1 Burnley
As expected, the hosts dominated but Burnley frustrated them to gain a terrific point.
Scott Arfield’s crisp finish was quickly cancelled out by Mohamed Salah with his fifth in eight games and Liverpool then did everything apart from grab a winner.
A bit of bad luck, combined with dogged defending, saw to that as the Clarets’ impressive away days continued.
Sean Dyche’s side have taken five points from trips to Chelsea, Spurs and now Liverpool.
Newcastle United 2-1 Stoke City
Suddenly the horizon is a lot brighter on Tyneside.
Rafa Benitez’s men sealed a third successive victory, courtesy of skipper Jamaal Lascelles’ second winner in as many games. They may have had long spells of possession but Stoke’s struggles on the road are familiar.
Watford 0-6 Manchester City
City manager Pep Guardiola called him a ‘club legend’ immediately after this romp and he’s not wrong. Sergio Aguero’s world-class status has never been in doubt since the moment he stepped foot in the Premier League.
After this hat-trick, class act Aguero is now just three goals away from becoming City’s all-time top goalscorer.
West Bromwich Albion 0-0 West Ham United
The Hawthorns is never an easy place to go. With that in mind, the Hammers should be encouraged by this point and a rare clean sheet away from home.
This, on a day, Gareth Barry equalled Ryan Giggs’ milestone of 632 Premier League appearances.
Tottenham Hotspur 0-0 Swansea City
Just when you think Swansea are set for a heavy beating, Paul Clement’s men have a habit of pulling out a result against the odds.
They may have ceded 75 per cent possession to Spurs, who also mustered 26 shots, but goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski led a rearguard action to ensure Spurs’ Wembley woes continues.
Chelsea 0-0 Arsenal
A rare goalless draw between these two London giants. A decent point for Arsenal who have struggled on their trips to Stamford Bridge.
Another London derby with a red card – David Luiz the latest recipient of red in this fixture.
