Quite a few of us think the Premier League title could well be returning north this season. Do you?
Well, they may have something to say about it in London, but Manchester City fans believe they are the team to beat, and with Pep Guardiola’s summer spending already over £200m they have a point. The Sky Blues are clear favourites, at handicap betting odds of 2.60, to take the trophy back to the Etihad.
Football betting pundits point to the recruitment of Monaco’s Bernardo Silva and Benjamin Mendy, as well as Kyle Walker, as a sign of Pep’s determination to sweep all before him this season. And he may yet go back to Monaco for their jewel Kylian M’Bappe.
Manchester United at 4.00 and champions Chelsea, at 4.20, are the biggest threats as Jose Mourinho has invested heavily in the goals and muscle of Romelu Lukaku in an attempt to turn his hard-to-beat side into a title winning one. Meanwhile, Chelsea represents the capital city’s best hope, and Antonio Conte may just have made the signing of the summer with his £70m capture of Alvaro Morata from Real Madrid.
Spurs’ first objective is to remain in the top four, and at 11.00 represents an outside chance for title glory, while Arsenal, at 12.00 have only made one eye-catching signing so far in Alexandre Lacazette. Liverpool, too, is are at 12.00 and, at 73.00, Everton wouldn’t spring as big a surprise as Leicester did two years ago. Ronald Koeman has signed Michael Keane and Wayne Rooney and is closing in on Gylfi Sigurdsson, a move which could turn the elite six into an elite seven and make Everton a top four club.
At the bottom end I’m afraid Huddersfield look nailed on for relegation at 1.55; and Brighton at 2.20 will find the step up difficult. For the third spot, it could be any one of 11 teams but the likely candidates are Burnley, Newcastle, Crystal Palace, Watford and Swansea. If they are without Gylfi Sigurdsson, who saved them last season, I suspect 3.00 may be a good price for the Swans.
