Premier League: Visiting Aston Villa Might Overwhelm Luton Town

Aston Villa vs Luton Town

Luton Town head to Villa Park with the objective of doing the seemingly unthinkable, which is to upset Aston Villa at home this Sunday for their next Premier League matchup.

The Hatters got a valuable point last time out, which bought them some time because they’re now above the dreaded relegation zone, sitting at 17th with five points.

But the pre-game SBOTOP betting odds don’t like their chances against Aston Villa, who are in the midst of a five-game winning streak across all competitions.

Aston Villa have emerged as one of the dark horse contenders for the Premier League title because they’re in fifth place with 19 points, only trailing by four points against league leaders Tottenham.

Talking Points

Aston Villa are virtually unstoppable at home

A key reason why Aston Villa are within arm’s reach of title contention is because they’ve been undefeated at home in the Premier League this season (W4), beating the likes of Everton, Crystal Palace, Brighton, and West Ham via an astounding aggregate tally of 17-3.

Unai Emery, who celebrates his first anniversary as Aston Villa boss this week, has turned Villa Park into a fortress. Since their 4-2 defeat by Arsenal in February, the Villans have yet to lose at Villa Park in 12 consecutive Premier League matches.

Under the former Arsenal boss, Aston Villa have become a goalscoring machine because of their depth, and 12 different players have found the back of the net already this season.

Ollie Watkins has been their top attacking threat with nine goals and five assists. The 27-year-old signed a long-term extension with the club, and he was recently called up to the English national football team, which is well deserved.

Leon Bailey and Douglas Luiz are not far off from Watkins in terms of scoring, with six goals apiece.

Bailey in particular was superb in their recent 4-1 win against AZ Alkmaar in the Europa Conference League group stage, as he opened the scoring binge with a brilliant strike past goalkeeper Mathew Ryan in the 13th minute.

Furthermore, the summer additions of Youri Tielemans and Moussa Diaby have been a masterstroke for the Villans. The two of them have three goals and four assists combined this term.

Luton Town showing grit

Even prior to this season, Luton Town have been tipped as one of the favourites to be relegated, but that looks to have not bothered them by one bit.

They’ve had poor Premier League 2023 results because they have an inferior team on paper, but they are a gritty group, and they showed such mentality in their 2-2 draw against Nottingham Forest.

Luton Town’s Elijah Adebayo celebrates scoring their second goal against Nottingham Forest

Rob Edwards’ men were down 2-0 after Chris Wood notched a brace for Nottingham Forest, but they made a rousing comeback through late goals from Chiedozie Ogbene and Elijah Adebayo.

Luton Town are going to be the underdogs in every Premier League game that they’ll play this season. But one thing’s for sure: They’re not going down without putting up a fight.

History

The Villans and the Hatters are going to meet for the first time in the Premier League. Their most recent matchup came in the first round of the 2016-17 EFL Cup, where Luton Town scored a massive 3-1 upset against Aston Villa.

Leeds United eliminated Luton Town 1-0 in the second round. And then Manchester United, led by Jose Mourinho, eventually won the whole thing after defeating Southampton 3-2 in the final.

Prior to 2016, there had been four matches between Aston Villa and Luton Town across all competitions, with the former notching three wins and the latter having one win.

All signs point to a high-scoring contest because only three teams have scored more Premier League goals than Aston Villa so far this season (19), while only three teams have conceded more than Luton Town (17), and neither side has kept a clean sheet in their last three matches.

Betting Tip

It’s no surprise that the Premier League 2023 odds favour Aston Villa to extend their winning streak on Sunday. The Villans are priced at 1.25 to win, while a victory for Luton Town is at 8.75, and a draw is installed at 5.40 in the 1X2 market.

Barring any unforeseen circumstances, it would be considered a disaster if the hosts somehow lost this game. And given their scoring form lately, Unai Emery’s boys should win convincingly by outgunning the Hatters in the final third.
