Bundesliga: Freiburg Seek Shock Double over Dortmund

Borussia Dortmund vs SC Freiburg

Borussia Dortmund’s faint Bundesliga title hopes received a boost last week after Bayern Munich’s slip-up allowed them to cut the champions’ lead to just six points.

However, the BVB must beware of a possible slip-up of their own as they host fourth-placed Freiburg. Christian Streich’s side missed a great chance to move up to third as they squandered a two-goal lead in a draw with relegation-threatened Arminia Bielefeld.

But the Breisgau Brazilians will be keen to bounce back and defy the Bundesliga 2022 betting odds as they seek to do a rare double against Dortmund, whom they beat on home soil earlier this season.

Talking Points

Dortmund still delivering the drama

Borussia Dortmund were part of the most dramatic game in the first weekend back from the winter break. The BVB went 2-0 down away to Eintracht Frankfurt within the first 25 minutes, but they stormed back with three goals in the last 20 minutes – including two in the last three – to steal the victory.

That win, coupled with Bayern Munich’s shock defeat to Borussia Monchengladbach, has cut Dortmund’s deficit against the Bavarians to just six points.

As has been the case for most of the season, Marco Rose’s Dortmund just can’t keep their defence tight enough. They have already conceded 28 goals this season, which is not quite good enough to contend for the title.

Luckily, Dortmund have the attacking talent to make up for their defensive shortcomings, which all makes for more drama.

Erling Haaland was unable to score for the second game in a row, but he did get an assist to bump his tally to 13 goals and 5 assists in just 12 Bundesliga appearances.

Meanwhile, Jude Bellingham, who had been more of a goal provider in recent months, found himself in the Bundesliga 2022 highlights by scoring his first league goal since October. The promising 18-year-old is enjoying a breakout season with 3 goals and 5 assists in 16 Bundesliga games.

And speaking of Dortmund youngsters, fellow teenager Gio Reyna could be set to make his return to the side after being missing since August due to a hamstring injury.

Dortmund have once again been dominant at home this season. They have won eight of their nine league matches at Signal Iduna Park, with their only defeat to date coming in the Der Klassiker against Bayern back in December.

Freiburg suffer post-break setback

Freiburg missed a fantastic opportunity to move into the top three as they dropped two points against second-from-bottom Arminia Bielefeld.

Freiburg went 2-0 up and looked on course for a comfortable win, but Bielefeld fought back in the second half to force a 2-2 draw.

It wasa disappointing showing from Freiburg’s excellent defence, which had conceded 16 goals heading into that match, to give up two goals to Bielefeld, who have scored the second-fewest goals in the Bundesliga this season.

Although, Freiburg’s steady improvement in front of goal is encouraging. They have scored two or more goals in their last two games. Young Jeong Woo-Yeong was impressive against Arminia as he scored his first Bundesliga goal since mid-October, and he also hit the woodwork.

Jeong has joined a four-way tie with Lucas Holer, Philipp Leinhart, and Vincenzo Grifo atop Freiburg’s top scorer list this season.

Still, Freiburg have one of the best away records in the league in large part due to their defence. They have 15 points from nine away games (4 wins, 3 draws, 2 losses), with 15 goals scored and just seven conceded – by far the fewest in the league.

History

Borussia Dortmund have absolutely dominated Freiburg over the last decade. In fact, they had gone over a decade without defeat against Freiburg from 2010 to 2021, with 16 wins and three draws in 19 matches during that time. That included a run of 12 straight wins.

But after a decade of sustained dominance by Dortmund, Freiburg are finally fighting back. They’ve recorded back-to-back 2-1 wins over BVB, both coming at home. That includes this year’s first meeting, as goals from Vincenzo Grifo and Roland Sallai saw them through.

Despite Freiburg’s impressive form this season, SBOTOP odds still have Dortmund installed as significant 1.52 favourites at home. Meanwhile, fourth-placed Freiburg have 5.20 odds to win and do the double over Dortmund, while a draw is at 4.50.

As good as Freiburg have been, it’s hard to go against Dortmund at home. They are simply a different side when playing at Signal Iduna Park. And with Erling Haaland fit and in fine form, they should have all the firepower they need to bring down Freiburg’s feisty defence.
