Colombia vs Uruguay
With club football taking a break in the next two weeks, our beloved footballers will don their national colors as they represent their respective countries in the international scene.
Saturday will be a big day for Colombia and Uruguay as both will try to get the upper hand in the ongoing World Cup 2022 qualifiers.
While top contenders Brazil and Argentina lead the standings with six points each, right behind them are Colombia and Uruguay, who are both separated by a solitary point.
It has been one month since both of these national teams were thrust into action. Colombia notched a win and a draw against their counterparts while Uruguay are coming off of an upset loss against Ecuador.
Both will be eager to improve on their campaigns with a positive result on this one, and we can expect them to produce numerous World Cup 2022 highlights.
The action here in the Southern Americas should give SBOTOP football fans something to look forward to as the CONMEBOL offers a different scenery than the usual ones we see over in Europe.
Read on below for the preview of this weekend’s matchup.
Talking Points
Colombia boast a three-headed monster out front
Team manager Carlos Queiroz is certainly enjoying his time coaching Los Cafeteros as his team is oozing with attacking talent.
The former assistant coach for Manchester United has the likes of Luis Muriel, Duvan Zapata, and James Rodriguez, and then he has Radamel Falcao and Jhon Cordoba who can come off the bench to add more scoring punch.
Colombia are definitely going to maximise their attacking prowess as a way to compensate their backline, who appeared porous at times.
Especially against Chile in the last time out, Colombia were in deep trouble when they gave up two quick goals from Inter Milan standouts Arturo Vidal and Alexis Sanchez in just a span of four minutes.
It was a good thing for them that Radamel Falcao saved the day with his equaliser during added time, but defence will remain a concern for Los Cafeteros.
Other than that, Colombia are hopeful that Everton star James Rodriguez will have a clean bill of health this weekend as he is recuperating from a testicular injury which he sustained during the most recent Merseyside derby versus Liverpool.
Gomez and Suarez will do the heavy lifting for Uruguay
La Celeste have to be sharp on both ends of the pitch if they are to improve on their campaign in the CONMEBOL.
Oscar Tabarez’s men are currently sixth at the table and they cannot afford to slip up against a formidable team like Colombia.
Like their counterparts, Uruguay have some great attacking talent which should push them through to a much-needed victory.
La Liga standouts Maxi Gomez and Luis Suarez have been pouring in the goals for their side and they are to be heavily relied on if they will engage in a shootout against Los Cafeteros.
Uruguay will miss a creative playmaker in Federico Valverde after confirming a leg fracture, which should sideline him for at least one month.
Arsenal’s Lucas Torreira is expected to take his place in the starting lineup alongside Rodrigo Bentancur and Mauro Arambarri in the midfield.
History
The overall head-to-heads favour the away team for this upcoming contest.
In their 14 matches against each other, Uruguay won in seven, while Colombia won in four matches along with three draws.
It has been a while since these two clubs locked horns. Their last match dates back to October 2016 to where they ended up with a very heated 2-2 draw as Abel Aguilar, Yerry Mina, Luis Suarez, and Cristian Rodriguez have traded goals.
Prior to that, Los Cafeteros and La Celeste have alternated wins in their previous six fixtures.
Betting Tip
Colombia vs Uruguay | 1X2 Draw @ 3.05 | |
November 14, 04:30 (GMT+8) |
The updated World Cup 2022 odds point to a relatively close affair this weekend.
Colombia are priced to win at 2.03, while Uruguay are not far behind with a price of 3.90 in the 1X2 market.
But given that both of these teams offer similar quality and depth, I see this ending up in a stalemate. Hence, my recommendation is going for a Draw @ 3.05.
On paper, goals might come in abundance for this match. So you may fancy placing your bets at Over 2.50 @ 2.04 or Total Goals 2-3 @ 1.78 as well.
The stakes are higher particularly for Uruguay as they’re trying to climb up to the fourth spot in order to ensure their qualification.
A loss here would hurt their cause especially since Paraguay and Ecuador are lurking behind Colombia.
