Bundesliga: Wolfsburg Eye Easy Win over Free-Falling Frankfurt

VfL Wolfsburg vs Eintracht Frankfurt

Wolfsburg produced one of the biggest shocks of the Bundesliga midweek fixtures after they thrashed title dark horses Bayer Leverkusen 4-1 away from home.

The Bundesliga 2020 betting odds favoured in-form Leverkusen — led by wunderkind Kai Havertz — to score another big win, only to be torn apart by the Wolves.

Wolfsburg will now have their sights set on picking up another impressive victory as they take on struggling Eintracht Frankfurt.

The Eagles have been in a free-fall even before the break in play and will be keen to avoid another heavy beating away from home.

Talking Points

Wolves not as deadly at home

Wolfsburg suffered their first defeat in eight matches after going down to Borussia Dortmund. But they bounced back in spectacular fashion as they thumped an in-form Leverkusen side 4-1 at the BayArena. Centre-back Marin Pongracic popped up with a surprising brace to lead the Wolves.

Two of Wolfsburg’s wins since returning from the break have come away from home. They’ve now gone unbeaten in their last five away matches, with four wins and a draw.

That’s in stark contrast to Wolfsburg’s home form, which has been much shakier. They’ve won just four of their 14 home matches, with six draws and four defeats.

Wolfsburg have surprisingly struggled to score goals at the Volkswagen Arena. But to their credit, they’ve also done well to keep their opponents from scoring. They’ve conceded just 15 away goals, tied for third-best in the league.

Wout Weghorst aims to help Wolfsburg to get another Bundesliga victory

Leading scorer Wout Weghorst (11 goals) has struggled to find the net of late. He’s scored just once in his last eight appearances in all competitions.

However, a matchup with Eintracht Frankfurt’s struggling defence can help him get back on track. Weghorst scored the first goal in Wolfsburg’s 2-0 win against Frankfurt in their first meeting this season.

Eintracht Frankfurt in awful form

The long break hasn’t helped to improve Eintracht Frankfurt’s awful Bundesliga 2020 results. After losing their last three matches before the pause in play, Frankfurt have gone winless in their first three matches back, with two more defeats.

In their defence, they faced four of the top five teams in the league in Borussia Dortmund, Bayer Leverkusen, Borussia Monchengladbach, and Bayern Munich during that time and lost heavily to all of them.

And to their credit, they fought back after going down 3-0 to Bayern despite eventually losing 5-2. Centre-back Martin Hinteregger scored twice in quick succession and is now the team’s top scorer with nine goals this season, eight in the league.

Frankfurt also came back from two goals down to pick up a hard-fought point in a thrilling 3-3 draw against Freiburg.

Eintracht Frankfurt’s defence has been a shambles during their recent slump. They’ve now conceded 21 goals over their last six games.

Meanwhile, their away form has been brutal. They have by far the worst away record in the Bundesliga, with just seven points and 13 goals scored in 13 matches.

Wolfsburg should prove to be a significantly easier matchup than Dortmund, Leverkusen, and Bayern, who were last three away opponents. Nevertheless, Frankfurt’s defence does not inspire much confidence at the moment.

History

Wolfsburg have had the clear upper hand over Eintracht Frankfurt in their recent head-to-heads. The Wolves have won eight of their last 14 meetings, with four draws and two defeats. And over their last 26 meetings, Wolfsburg have won 11 games to Frankfurt’s four, with 11 draws.

Curiously, though, the away side has had a lot of success in this matchup in recent years. The away team has won the last five games between the two teams. That includes Wolfsburg’s 2-0 win at Frankfurt earlier this season.

Betting Tip

??
VfL Wolfsburg vs Eintracht Frankfurt Over 2.5 Goals @ 1.69
May 28, 21:30 (GMT+8)

SBOBET odds have Wolfsburg priced at 1.98 to pick up the home win over Eintracht Frankfurt, who are 3.45 underdogs to snap their long winless drought. A draw is 3.60.

Wolfsburg look good for the win given the recent form of both clubs, but the over under market also has an interesting bet.

The total has gone over 2.5 goals in Frankfurt’s last seven matches, and I expect a fair few goals to go flying in once again. If there’s ever a match where Wolfsburg can improve on their surprisingly poor tally of home goals, this one against a struggling Frankfurt defence is it.

A SHORT EXPLANATION ON HOW OUR (??) BETS ARE WORTH:
?? = €20 (Highly confident) ?? = €10 (CONFIDENT) ?? = €5 (SOMEWHAT CONFIDENT)
