Premier League: Liverpool Can Almost Touch It Now!

Liverpool 2-0 Manchester United

The chant of: “We’re gonna win the League” rang loud and clear around Anfield this evening as Liverpool beat Manchester United 2-0, to go 16 points ahead at the top of the Premier League table.

An early goal for Virgil Van Dijk, and a late, late one from Mo Salah sent the Kop wild with joy as Jurgen Klopp’s side took another giant stride towards a first title in three decades. And it must have been sweet to beat their old rivals Manchester United, the club which dominated the competition for so long.

The remaining Premier League 2020 results will have to be the most amazing and most incredible ever seen in the competition’s history to stop the Reds now

…I just can’t see it!

Highlights of the game

Liverpool dominated the game for 75 minutes before United gave them a scare, and they were ahead on 15 minutes when a corner swung in and Van Dijk climbed high above Harry Maguire to plant a bullet header past De Gea and into the net.

That calmed the Reds’ nerves and they were all over their visitors for the remainder of the half and were twice denied by VAR.

Premier League: Van Dijk's opener and Mo Salah's finish helped Liverpool win vs Manchester United
Van Dijk celebrates with Mo Salah after scoring Liverpool’s second goal against Manchester United

He may not score as many as Salah or Sadio Mane but Roberto Firmino gets his fair share of the crucial goals and every team in the world would surely have the Brazilian in their starting line-up. He hasn’t scored at Anfield this season, but he twice looked like breaking that hoodoo half way through the first 45.

Van Dijk challenged De Gea for a lofted ball and when United failed to clear, Firmino eventually picked it up and rifled a beautiful shot past the keeper and into the net.

VAR took a look and wiped out the goal for a foul on the keeper. I would think it was a decision which stunned almost everyone watching and it was hard on Firmino, who was inches away from scoring again just a minute later.

The rampant hosts had the ball in the net again when fantastic play simply sliced the Manchester United defence apart and Georginio Wijnaldum slid the ball into the corner of the net. But this time he was, correctly, judged to be marginally offside.

The Red Devils had a chance to level with their first real attack when Aaron Wan Bissaka ghosted in on the right and poked the ball across the Liverpool six yard box. It just needed a touch from Andreas Pereira but he was agonizingly short.

United were without the injured Marcus Rashford, and worse news came through this afternoon that he would be out for three months with a serious back injury. And watching that miss must have hurt Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Liverpool hit the woodwork twice at the start of the second half. First Salah fluffed a chance you’d expect him to score and it skidded away off the post, then Jordan Henderson let rip and De Gea touched it onto the post.

United were somehow still in the game and the hosts began to get the jitters. Anthony Martial had a great chance but rushed his shot and fired wide, then Alisson made a superb save to deny Fred.

The visitors continued to press, but the roof came off Anfield when their keeper fired a long ball up field into the path of Salah, and the Egyptian hit man slid the ball calmly home.

Key statistics

It’s time to stop looking at the Premier League 2020 betting odds for the winner this season. But hey; of course there’s a fantastic range of offers here at SBOBET for all the big leagues in Europe and for every match in the English top flight.

But if Liverpool concede their 16 point lead with just 16 games left I’ll buy a Blackburn Rovers shirt!

This win made in 21 wins and a draw from 22 games and they have now beaten every team in the league.

They just need 30 more points to win their first title in 30 years.

But there’s more bad news for United fans, they’ve lost three consecutive games n Merseyside (two against Liverpool and one against Everton) for the first time since 1979.

What’s next?

Liverpool are favourites to retain the Champions League and win the Premier League as well of course. Next week they have an FA Cup tie away to Shrewsbury and Klopp will give his youngsters a chance to shine again after the beat Everton in the third round.

Before that they take a trip to Wolves in the league in their relentless march to the title.

Manchester United have a home game against Burnley on Wednesday night and that won’t be an easy ride. The Clarets have just ended a poor run of form with an impressive victory over third placed Leicester City.
